Nearly Half Of Detroit’s Adults Are Functionally Illiterate, Report Finds

Detroit Literacy

The Huffington Post -

Detroit’s population fell by 25 percent in the last decade. And of those that stuck around, nearly half of them are functionally illiterate, a new report finds.

According to estimates by The National Institute for Literacy, roughly 47 percent of adults in Detroit, Michigan — 200,000 total — are “functionally illiterate,” meaning they have trouble with reading, speaking, writing and computational skills. Even more surprisingly, the Detroit Regional Workforce finds half of that illiterate population has obtained a high school degree.

The DRWF report places particular focus on the lack of resources available to those hoping to better educate themselves, with fewer than 10 percent of those in need of help actually receiving it. Only 18 percent of the programs surveyed serve English-language learners, despite 10 percent of the adult population of Detroit speaking English “less than very well.”

Additionally, the report finds, one in three workers in the state of Michigan lack the skills or credentials to pursue additional education beyond high school.

In March, the Detroit unemployment rate hit 11.8 percent, one of the highest in the nation, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last month. There is a glimmer of hope, however: Detroit’s unemployment rate dropped by 3.3 percent in the last year alone.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder have been aggressively attempting to reinvent the once-great Motor City. Last year, the Wall Street Journal reported that then newly-elected Mayor Bing planned to tear down 10,000 of the city’s 90,000 abandoned properties.

” Detroit’s unemployment rate dropped by 3.3 percent in the last year alone. ”

Maybe it just dropped because the illiterate couldn’t fill out the unemployment forms.

Yes, but they’re fluent in Jive.

More seriously, this is what happens when there is no alternative. Whether it is the public school system or the Federal Reserve, when people can’t take their business elsewhere, the organizations feed upon themselves and the customer, student or taxpayer gets the shaft.

There’s another reason for illiteracy: Illegal aliens cross the border and they can’t read or write in their OWN language. But they’re the preferred employee, right?! For every illiterate illegal that f&cks up a job, a legal person gets to charge an ass load of money to fix the damage.

And yet, they spend an enormous amount of money per pupil for education. At least in Texas (number 44 in educational spending), we have greater success in educating all students (citizen and illegal immigrant).

Even with a tsunami of illegals swamping the state, we manage to train our kids to read. Even illegals see education as an advantage and a tool for upward mobility. Our worst demographic cohort as measure by state standardized testin is made up up of black males. Is there some cultural value at work in Detroit that contributed to a 50% illiteracy rate?

    Just asking.

An obvious math component of the percentages quoted may be that most of the smart people left Detroit years ago, leaving the idiots to remain.

Meanwhile, Chicago is fully embracing the Detroit economic and education models. That’s the type of success served up by big union/democrat cronyism. The teeming masses of illiterates are kept in their place on the liberal entitlement plantation… doled out portions of the incomes extracted from people who work and pay taxes, thus continuing and expanding the cycle of ignorance and dependency.

@MAJOR Mike, ‘Is there some cultural value at work in Detroit that contributed to a 50% illiteracy rate?’
Absolutely. It isn’t cool in the ‘hood to be a good student.

Plus, among the ‘adults’, many are ashamed that they can’t read, and will cover up their problem as much as they can. If they have to fill out ‘forms’ for job apps, etc., they will take them home with them.

Back when things were booming, the auto industry kept many of these people in jobs, because working on the line didn’t require any book-learnin’. Then the SHTF.
They can’t get away with that these days. Factory workers require at least a high school education and math skills.
    Thank you, UAW.

@Norman Einstein- “It isn’t cool in the ‘hood to be a good student”. You nailed it. And that is also why the Democrat desire to throw more $$ at the problem won’t do any good. Unless the culture of this rathole starts to change, it’s all wasted money. Until the Bill Cosby idea of individual responsibility and education take hold over the Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton “collective responsibility” and “blame Whitey” for not enough education $$” excuses, things won’t change.

I agree with everyone on why Detoilet is in the shape that it is in and the “reasoning” that some groups have regarding education. But eventually everyone grows up and many regret not learning the basics at an early age. I have an issue with this quote above: “The DRWF report places particular focus on the lack of resources available to those hoping to better educate themselves, with fewer than 10 percent of those in need of help actually receiving it.” There are many ways to learn – how many millions of LEGAL immigrants learned these things in the last 200 years? They did not have to have a Government Program to help them – they just pulled their big boy/girl pants up and DID IT on their own. There are Public Libraries, thrift stores and flea markets full of educational material (free or dirt cheap) and all that these people need to do is DO IT THEMSELVES. But they will not, they will wait for someone to “help” them because they are “victims”.

maybe there is a way to get some folks with common sense elected in Detroit. Since half the population can’t read, switch the ballots to pics only and have some attractive conservative women run ( and heaven knows there are plenty of those, and few attractive libs) Just a thought outside the box.
I only go near Detroit to fly out of it.

@Jarhead, you’re absolutely correct about throwing money at the problem. The poor, downtrodden victimhood/entitlement mindset will never change as long as the likes of Sharpton, Jackson and other race baiters are around.
Cosby was villified because what he recommended was just too much WORK. Take responsibility? WTF? That ain’t cool.

BTW, thanks for the Joe Theisman mention. Not many people know that Joe and I are ‘tight’. ;)

Big surprise, liberalism is proven to work yet again. All it takes is two easy steps:

    Step 1:
Dig a big hole (aka liberalism) and watch the lowlifes crawl in. Now you have them all grouped together in one spot.

    Step 2:
If you’re not a liberal, leave. Since libs can’t think OR read, they stay put and we get to live our lives free from them!
