I’m a disabled vet and unable to travel. I thank all those, from the bottom of my heart, to have taken their time and their own resources to get there and speak for me. What people don’t realize is that the mall is not filled simply because it was reserved for another party. Nevertheless, there are people packed in on both sides of the mall all the way to the monument.

When we posted this pic we didn’t attach a guess at the number of people. Frankly, it is meaningless to me.
Certainly it’s more than the “thousands of people” the MSM so cavalierly reported between Tofu recipes and “Up Close and Personal with Al Franken.” That is what is important.
I love hearing the MSM underreport. It’s like watching them whistle past the graveyard like they are in Bridge Over River Kwai.
The picture is of a beautiful summer day, with hordes of citizens from around the nation peacefully participating in democracy.

More importantly, for every one of those patriots who attended the rally and march in Washington DC there were one hundred others who supported the cause but for one reason or another could not make the trip. In particular, in the West where I live it was very difficult to get time off from work to attend, and even though I’m speaking for myself I’ll bet there are many hundreds of thousands of others in AZ, NM, CO, UT, ID, WA, OR, CA and my own state of NV who were being represented by those who were there. So while the actual number may be up for grabs somewhere between 70,000 and 1.5 million you can bet that the final number could be multiplied by a factor of 100. Next time I’m going, and I’m betting that we’ll get not 70,000, or 1.5 mil but ten or fifteen mil. Thanks to all those who attended. Great picture.

I am a DC firefighter who in attendance at the Tea Party. DCFD does not do crowd estimates, does not have the people educated in how to do it nor the proper equipment. There are however many Liberals in charge of the Public Information Office whom gave the number estimate. I spoke with 2 firefighters at work today who were working the event. They were at 3rd and Constitution NW, and were very discouraged by the “low”numbers they saw. They laughed when I said there were at least a million there, they said they only saw 10 thousand or a tad more. I had to explain to them that they only saw a small part of the march. They also said they fisrt saw the crowd at 1130 am, after the march was over and gathered at the capitol. They were stunned when I showed them the time lapse video of all the people they never saw. They were only privy to a fraction of the gathering and thought that was the crowd. In addition the DCFD or politically correctly named DC Fire and EMS command unit was there two and only privy to a fraction of the march. This could explain the disconnect. I would be happy to go on the record with these facts to any reporter at any given time. This blog has my permission to give my e-mail to any and all media.

Allow me first to preface my re-snarks with two observations: one, the picture does indeed show a very nice panorama; and two, your turnout was more than respectable, even with the wall-to-wall, week-after-week promotion.
That said, the notion that the picture supports anything like a million-man turnout is laughable. Y’all really have no sense for what a million people look like on the ground, do you? It’s like Nate Silver said, asserting this turnout to be one million strong is like me claiming I have a 53-inch dick. Absurd.
But by all means, y’all keep proudly flashing this photo around. It’s so sweet.

I was there; just to the right of the Grant statue, and I can guarantee you the figure was close to a million; which you can readily see in this picture. Also, we dropped by the next day and saw the 175 people that were there to support Obamacare. Yes that is 175; not 175,000. I’m sure you saw the extensive coverage in the media about it, right? 9/12 Washington DC Protest HELP!
Does anyone have any VIDEO or AUDIO of Chris Cassone performing “Take Our Country Back” at 12:30pm on the main stage of the Washington DC protest?
Does anyone know how the guy is that had the heart attack during Chris Cassone’s performance? They stopped mid-performance to announce a medical emergency.
The photo you see doesn’t represent everyone who attended – people were still stuck on Pennsylvania Avenue and traffic was grid-locked also.
This was Woodstock multiplied!
I contacted Dick Armey and FreedomWorks staff and suggested the photo should be made into a POST CARD so the American people can send them to their local CongressPeople and Senators.

When I worked at the House of Reprehisible some years ago, I saw the newsies filming about 20 people walking in a circle carrying signs on the steps of the Rayburn Building. When seen on the nightly news, it looked like hundreds! This is a still – can’t fool that easily (you can spot repeats) so this administration needs to stay in the dark, but Congress needs to wake up. We can’t do anything about BO until 12, but every member of the House is up in 10. Let’s rid ourselves of the sorry bastards.

Pinko, please, push on the picture twice. Pennsylvania and Maryland Aves are both relatively clear past Third Street, as is the Mall itself.
And see that needle way down on the other end? That’s fronted by 15th Street. Obama’s inauguration crowd, which was in the million-plus range, filled that whole vast expanse.
This is the definitive teabagger-turnout photo, y’all. The crowd has already marched, and is fully assembled. This is its maximum extent, and there’s no way that that’s Ohio Stadium on an autumn Saturday afternoon times ten. Probably not even times two.
Still, it’s a handsome picture, and a healthy crowd. Too bad y’all want to ruin it with pathetic exxagerations.

The area of the mall that is clear is because that area was designated for counter protest!!! If the people in the side streets (and BEHIND!!! the Capitol) were allowed on those pieces of real estate it would look every bit as much as packed as any other event in the history of Washington DC. BUT THAT IS NOT THE POINT!
As Irony Curtain has said, there was more MSM in Crawford Texas when Cindy Sheehan had 5 people in a ditch protesting. THAT’S THE POINT!
When Charles Gibson says he LEFT TOWN for the event, there is something extremely WRONG WITH THE MSM.
And all this attitude is going to do is INFLAME US MORE!
So keep it going. Keep waving the hand of dismissal.

That clear area was off limits to the 9/12 protesters as there was no permit for that area. The crowds went WAY RIGHT and to my OTHER RIGHT out of range of the captured photo. The march started EARLY as the police said the crowds had reached “CRITICAL MASS” and ordered the promoters to start the march BEFORE the scheduled time.
I met many Congressmen and women and I asked each of them the same question “Will this make a difference?” and they ALL answered “Oh yes!” very emphatically.
If this was a Liberal event, MSM would’ve covered this as if it was the St. Patty’s Day Parade and re-ran it to DEATH! The poor coverage has just pissed these people off even more when they went home. Thank God for Al Gore’s Internet! He must be kicking himself in the ass right now.
This event can not and will not be ignored. You CAN NOT erase it from American History. Your dismissal is FUTILE.

I am a DC firefighter who in attendance at the Tea Party. DCFD does not do crowd estimates, does not have the people educated in how to do it nor the proper equipment. There are however many Liberals in charge of the Public Information Office whom gave the number estimate. I spoke with 2 firefighters at work today who were working the event. They were at 3rd and Constitution NW, and were very discouraged by the “low”numbers they saw. They laughed when I said there were at least a million there, they said they only saw 10 thousand or a tad more. I had to explain to them that they only saw a small part of the march. They also said they fisrt saw the crowd at 1130 am, after the march was over and gathered at the capitol. They were stunned when I showed them the time lapse video of all the people they never saw. They were only privy to a fraction of the gathering and thought that was the crowd. In addition the DCFD or politically correctly named DC Fire and EMS command unit was there two and only privy to a fraction of the march. This could explain the disconnect. I would be happy to go on the record with these facts to any reporter at any given time. This blog has my permission to give my e-mail to any and all media.
I’m sure what he is describing happens all the time in DC. I’m not going to make a crowd estimate – nor do I care. But your dismissal, saying this was routine in DC, is as ridiculous as the over-estimated claims.
What is the basis and need to diminish?

Autism 5k run had 1450 participants
“The Shamrock Triple Play was the Third Largest Event” for a DC run. It had 15,000 people. The 2 biggest races Credit Union Cherry Blossom and Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K, combined for 40,000 finishers.
The largest 10k race in the country was in Atlanta (is that sorta flyover country?) it had 55,000
people. But 50K+ is “routine” in DC, right?
And these people look forward to and plan ALL YEAR for the event.

You can Google Earth the mall and using the ruler option get a pretty good idea how large the area is, that is filled, in square feet. Conservatively figure two square feet to two and a half square feet per person.

@Anonymous – 2.5 sq.ft. per person is jam capacity, i.e. you literally cannot move. More than 100 people packed in such fashion would be considered a very dangerous situation for the participants.
A more reasonable estimate for a tight crowd where one might actually be able to move their arms around to applaud, raise signs, and such is closer to 10 sq.ft. per person.

Top of the Capitol – NOT. I have a few recent (2007) photos taken with the same vantage-point / same perspective view (a lot less people). They were taken from the top of STAIRS at the west entrance to the Capitol Building. That is a LONG way from the top of the Capitol building itself.
When trying to sell a point, don’t lie. It puts all else into question.

It’s not a lie. What do we mean by “top” of the Capitol? Top of the dome, or top of the building? I took a pic from the top of the building at the base of the dome, not exactly the “top”, of the Washington Monument at night, which shows the roof line, which looks about the same perspective. I’ll e-mail it to IOTW, and if they want to make it available, so be it. But this is tantamount to arguing over how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.

The thing to remember is that there is about another 15 to 20% of the crowd on either side that I couldn’t get into the shot. it’s much bigger than even this image shows. If’ I went blind tomorrow and couldn’t take another shot, I would be fine with having been blessed with teh opportunity to have taken this one.

“whatyousee” asked why we haven’t seen an areal shot of the crowd. The answer is that there is no areal shot available. The air space above the Capitol and the White House is completely restricted to military aircraft only and this would not have been a legitimate military mission. This was the best angle we could get and it took a congressional escort to get that. Believe me, I would love to have had that shot. But I’m content with this.

On the morning of Saturday, September 12, President Obama boarded Marine One at the White House en route to Andrews Air Force Base just southeast of the Washington D.C. beltway in Maryland. From there he flew to Minnesota to address a 15,000 attendee rally on health care. By 10:30 AM freedom-loving Americans concerned with the future of their country had begun marching down Pennsylvania Avenue. The throng of people who flooded the streets, metro stops, and Freedom Plaza would have been visible from the window of the President’s aircraft as he traveled to Andrews Air Force Base. In fact, Marine One was recognized by many of the protestors.
Robert Gibbs said on Friday, September 11, concerning the March on Washington, “I don’t know who the group is.” It wasn’t until Sunday when Gibbs was shown a picture from the front page of the Washington Post that he acknowledged that it even took place. However, Mr. Obama witnessed the March on Washington first hand from the air as he left the city to speak to a much smaller crowd.
FreedomWorks President Matt Kibbe commented, “No matter what the left wing media says about how many people were at the march, the President knows how big it was: he flew right over it. If he really wanted to address citizens concerned about health care legislation and the future of their country he should have landed the helicopter on the Capitol lawn.”
FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey commented, “I honestly believe the President wanted to address Americans concerned with health care, but after seeing the size of the crowd he realized there was no place to land and flew to Minnesota instead.”

A Moment for the Ages!
Because of some physical issues I’m dealing with I was in a pretty good amount of pain after the two days I’d already spent shooting in Washington. So it was mercifully decided that I would not march with the group from Freedom Plaza (about a block from the White House). Instead I would go directly to the rally point at the base of the Capitol Building. However, the march got off to an earlier start than expected. So while I was watching the morning news the “angry mob” was fast descending upon the Capitol. The weight of what I saw when I got there was withering. It was a sea of humanity spreading in all directions. I was a bit daunted by the fact that I had to get through this crowd to the stage!
I had a press pass and about thirty pounds of camera gear hanging off my vest so it wasn’t too tough to get people to understand that I wasn’t just trying to cut to the front in order to be closer to the action. I really did need to get there. When I got through the crowd I saw my recently made buddy FreedomWorks Campaign Coordinator Nan Swift who had been crying for joy for most of the morning. “Who could have imagined this?” she said. Several people spoke of the bad dream they’d all had the night before of no one showing up. But as it turned out, it was just a bad dream.
There was no time to groove on that now though. I was late and there was work to be done. Lord only knew how much I’d already missed. So I started shooting straight away. There were several TV cameras set up on the media riser and I really couldn’t get the shot I wanted from there. So I said “hang the riser” and snuck around on the grass in front of the cameras minding to stay out of their shot.
For each speaker I would try to get a shot from the grass and then another one from behind the stage with the crowd as a back drop. This made for a lot of running back and forth. At some point in the day I was backstage (as it were) and FreedomWorks President Matt Kibbee came up to me with another gentleman whose name I can’t remember just now. “This is the man.” he told the guy pointing at me, “He is the one to take the shot when you’re ready.”
Huh? What shot? Oh well, I assumed I’d figure it out when the time came. Sure enough the time came. The man Matt had pointed me out to grabbed me and told me to keep an eye on Georgia 6th District Representative Tom Price. When Price was done speaking he was going to walk three other people and me up to the balcony of the Capitol Building. The idea was to get a shot of the whole crowd. Where we were going is a highly restricted place and the only way we could get up there was with a congressional escort.
The congressmen finished his remarks, the introduction was made and off we went. It turns out that Representative Price is from my home district and we struck up a conversation. As we went through the heavily guarded gate and began to ascend the steps I was deeply stricken by where we were and the fact that we were the only ones who would get this opportunity. The burden to not waste this occasion was heavy upon me. I kept telling myself, “Don’t screw this shot up.” About half way up to the terrace where inaugural speeches are given a women named Nicole Darland stepped to the microphone on the stage now far below us and began to sing the National Anthem. As she sang the boisterous mass of people began to join in as loud as they could. We stopped talking and stood silently in the shadow of the dome of the Capitol with a giant American flag waving over our heads.
Congressman Price who was one step above me leaned over and said, “What a perfect time to be in this very place.” Perfect indeed! The emotion of the moment was breathtaking. I kept thinking of all the people I wished could have been with me at this very moment starting with my wife Carolyn who was somewhere down in the crowd. The photographer in me wanted to sneak a shot up at the dome and the flag. Tt really would have been a great picture. But I knew the image couldn’t have accurately conveyed the entirety of experience. So instead I listened to the romantic in me that said, “Respect the occasion. Drink this experience right down to the bottom of the glass because you will never be here again.”
Sometimes it’s best to just silently watch and let the moment do the talking.

Just to give a little more perspective: the straight-line distance from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol is approximately 2 MILES. So, for those who aren’t familiar with this area, this isn’t just a couple of city block, this is a couple of city MILES.

I encourage everyone here to do the same!

Mr. Lindel, the problem with action is the timing. If the “action” takes place too soon, it precipitates a great deal of ugliness – repression, gun control, summary executions, extra-legal imprisonment, beatings, etc. just look of what Iran is going through. It can also alienate large segments of the population. Most law-abiding citizens perceive “action” as lawless violence. What this march on Washington did, was show the dead beat politicians that we are willing to get out from in front of our TVs and voice our views. Some traveling thousands of miles to do so. That’s a powerful message to a politician who is too lazy to get it’s own gin and tonic.

I don’t feel the need to defend myself to anyone who would stoop so low as to make such claims as to say that this image wasn’t taken at the time I say it did. I feel certain that these same people are the ones who are saying that the moon landing didn’t happen. Proverbs says when you argue with a fool, two fools argue. Suffice to say I was there, I took the photos, I have witnesses (not that my detractors would believe anyone who would disagree with them). Can’t we find anything else to discuss.

I was there. The photo the Mr. Beck took is what it looked like. The fake one is the one where people have filled in the mall. We were NOT allowed on certain parts of the mall, as it was reserved. So in the REAL photos of Sept 12, you should see some green on the mall. Now, I did leave early, so if anyone stayed for the whole rally, maybe they could correct me, if I am wrong and the mall filled in later in the day.

Mr Beck, I just wrote a letter to the editor of the CS Monitor decrying their failure in journalism by failing to contact you and getting the facts. Your wife is right, the truth DOES come out. It will in your case. It will with God. I applaud your work and I thank you for that photo. It lifted me up and it has done the same for every person I shared it with. I have no idea who took the picture they have posted as a ‘fake’, but I never left my location at the Capitol to take pictures from that perspective. I voted the President in. Tell me why he calls himself BLACK. when he has a white Mother? ! ? Is he disowning his Mother. HE is a MULATTO..[ the offspring of one white parent and one black parent.]I and a sister have Mulatto’s great grandchildren. We know and they know their race. President needs back in college or grade school. In many, many states there are houses that are flooded due to the fact the water came higher then the street level. The States and the USA Govt. can easily fix many of these. Make it a law that all new construction in these areas, be built on a 3 or 4 foot higher pad then street level. Save money, heart aches etc. About the homeless person and homeless families there can c be help by our President and Senate and Congress. Place money where it is really need to help our citizens. Many vacant U S Veteran Hospitals,and other hospitals, hotels, commercial buildings etc, are empty. Start with the empty veteran hospitals; hire people to work and repair and fix them enough for people to live inside rather then live in cars, trucks, sidewalks, fields etc. Put a roof over their heads. The answer is simple . .set aside money to purchase appliances, cars etc. Instead fix these places up. Put people to work, and children under a roof. Most rooms have a bath. Some one should inform the President to forget trips and start helping our very, very unfortunate citizens. Try sleeping under paper, freezing weather, rain,or snow. Unable to get medical help, as of now. My one sister took a trip with others to Spain. Her very first day there they went up stone steps for a sight seeing view. My sister stumbled on the steps. Broke her leg in two places. Bones were protruding her skin. They sent for an ambulance. Vi was taken to hospital. Three different doctors operated on her. Then in recovery; leg in cast. She was measured for a pair of crutches, she received. Went back to the hotel in an ambulance. Now this is in Spain.. her charges for all of this was nineteen dollars. Not even a citizen. We could set up something better then what they are doing now. I will admit help needs to be given when needed. I am a WW2 Veteran. Navy medical field. Worked in surgery also over sea.. Do you realize we veterans receive less social security. We fought the war,long time away from home and love ones. I know over ten years I have received mail that this was to be taken care of. Famous word “BOLONEY” they are waiting for us , all to die; then they will pass the raise to match level of others.. I feel the President certainly means well, but should stop a lot of visits, invite them here, save money,place some of it to help our poor homeless . Many because they lost their jobs are homeless. . It is no wonder the crowd was in D C on 9/11 We have many things to be concern about. I understand, foreign countries own more of our water plants then we do. Who will be in control of United States in near future? I am embarrassed to leave such drastic debts to my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren that are born, and others yet to appear. Too too deeply in debt. This March was needed but was it heeded?

As you will hear, Beck is a force that won’t easily be toyed with (as well as being a genuinely nice man, a one-two punch that is difficult to slander.) I say, let them keep marginalizing. With each invective their tent shrinks exponentially.
Fellow Americans can’t even peacefully voice their opinions without these petty back-biters finding conspiracy theories in a friggin photo of the event. They wring their wormy hands about the Patriot Act, yet, reveal themselves as honest to goodness enemies of the constitution.
Wait til they get serious about the Fairness Doctrine again. (That train will be pulling in right around the time that they don’t get GOVERNMENT HEALTH CARE – and don’t let these imbeciles try and convince you that what they want is anything short of that.)

I just listened to BigFurHat’s tape and had another thought….Mr. Beck said he could not get pictures on one level of the Capitol because there were too many TV cameras there. What happened to all those shots? I’m sure the cameramen came prepared for some wide-angle shots…….or did they? Michael Beck is a hero to this crowd.

What a great bunch of people! I also look forward to purchasing M. Beck’s photo of the event and wonder why the media will not release their own photos. Was Fox there?

They had that Griff Jenkins running around like Matt Lesko (Griff should have been wearing the green question mark suit) asking silly questions, jumping over fences, and generally creating an atmosphere like this was a carnival.
That damn nerd set the tone 180* from where it should have been.

And you’re right. By Beck’s accounting there were plenty of reporters – with no film in their cameras, apparently.

I wanted to attend this rally so bad but due economic circumstances could not afford the change that was dealt me by a president who bows to 3rd world countries.

Great shot but what that picture does not show is the North and South lawns of the capitol building where the stage was set up. The capitol police had clearly thought that they would only have to handle a crowd that would fill up the two lawns. They did not allow crowds on the Mall “until” the two lawns were filled. Good point Greg. You’re right. The image prints out to 8 x 33 and had those outer views been made a part of it the picture would have been another ten inches on either side. I did get the shots, but the view of the crowd on my right was badly obscured by trees and as I said earlier in this blog string, it would have put the overall image out of balance. In truth, this poster doesn’t show the entire crowd. it only shows what I was able to capture.

It’s backed by evidence (pictures and clips) and determining the boundaries of the protesters and calculation of final tally derived from the density of the crowd at each given block. My calculus puts the figures around 130k up to 160k.

Well, I have done it! I have read the entire text of proposed House
Bill 3200: The Affordable Health Care Choices Act of 2009. I studied
it with particular emphasis from my area of expertise, constitutional
law. I was frankly concerned that parts of the proposed law that were
being discussed might be unconstitutional. What I found was far worse
than what I had heard or expected.
To begin with, much of what has been said about the law and its
implications is in fact true, despite what the Democrats and the
media are saying. The law does provide for rationing of health care,
particularly where senior citizens and other classes of citizens are
involved, free health care for illegal immigrants, free abortion
services, and probably forced participation in abortions by members
of the medical profession.
The Bill will also eventually force private insurance companies out
of business and put everyone into a government run system.
All decisions about personal health care will ultimately be made by federal
bureaucrats and most of them will not be health care professionals.
Hospital admissions, payments to physicians, and allocations of
necessary medical devices will be strictly controlled.
However, as scary as all of that it, it just scratches the surface.
In fact, I have concluded that this legislation really has no intention
of providing affordable health care choices. Instead it is a
convenient cover for the most massive transfer of power to the
Executive Branch of government that has ever occurred, or
even been contemplated. If this law or a similar one is adopted,
major portions of the Constitution of the United States will effectively
have been destroyed.
The first thing to go will be the masterfully crafted balance of
power between the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of the
U.S. Government. The Congress will be transferring to the Obama
Administration authority in a number of different areas over the lives
of the American people and the businesses they own. The irony is
that the Congress doesn’t have any authority to legislate in most of those
areas to begin with. I defy anyone to read the text of the U.S.
Constitution and find any authority granted to the members of
Congress to regulate health care.
This legislation also provides for access by the appointees of the
Obama administration of all of your personal healthcare information,
your personal financial information, and the information of your
employer, physician, and hospital. All of this is a direct violation
of the specific provisions of the 4th Amendment to the Constitution
protecting
against unreasonable searches and seizures. You can also forget about your
right to privacy. That will have been legislated into oblivion regardless
of
what the 3rd and 4th Amendments may provide.
If you decide not to have healthcare insurance or if you have private
insurance that is not deemed “acceptable” to the “Health Choices
Administrator” appointed by Obama there will be a tax imposed on you.
It is called a “tax” instead of a fine because of the intent to avoid
application of the due process clause of the 5th Amendment.
However, that doesn’t work because since there is nothing in the law
that allows you to contest or appeal the imposition of the tax, it is
definitely depriving someone of property without the “due process” of
law.
So, there are three of those pesky amendments that the far left hate
so much out the original ten in the Bill of Rights that are effectively
nullified by this law. It doesn’t stop there though. The 9th Amendment
that provides: “The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights,
shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people;
“The 10th Amendment states: “The powers not delegated to the United
States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are
preserved
to the States respectively, or to the people.” Under the provisions of
this piece of Congressional handiwork neither the people nor the
states are going to have any rights or powers at all in many areas
that once were theirs to control.
I could write many more pages about this legislation, but I think you
get the idea. This is not about health care; it is about seizing
power and limiting rights. Article 6 of the Constitution requires the
members of both houses of Congress to “be bound by oath or
affirmation” to support the Constitution. If I was a member of
Congress I would not be able to vote for this legislation or
anything like it without feeling I was violating that sacred oath or
affirmation. If I voted for it anyway I would hope the American
people would hold me accountable.
