STOCKHOLM — A Swedish artist who received death threats after depicting the Prophet Mohammed as a dog said Wednesday he would display new paintings of the prophet at an exhibition in the immigrant-heavy city of Malmoe later this year.
“It’s important to continue because if you yield to the threats and back away, you have abandoned the democratic principle,” Lars Vilks said.
The artist has faced numerous death threats since his drawing of the Muslim prophet with the body of a dog was first published by Swedish regional daily Nerikes Allehanda in 2007, illustrating an editorial on the importance of freedom of expression.
The new paintings of Mohammed would show the prophet — still with a dog’s body — in famous works by artists including Claude Monet, Peter Paul Rubens and Anders Zorn, Vilks said.
It was “hard to tell” whether the July exhibition at a gallery in Sweden’s third largest city, Malmoe, would prompt more protests and threats, he said.

I thought the exact same thing!. I mean, cudos for taking a solid position on not being intimidated, but cripes!, my six year old draws better than this!!
I use to doodle better than this. This is art????

What is art is always subjective but sometimes I feel like it subjects me to abuse.
For pissing off these guys, art matters not. Nor any resemblence to him. After all who knows what he really looked like anyway since you’ve never been allowed to depict his image.
Anything labeled as the prophet is fair game.
I sumbit evidence item #2877: South Park imaging only a teddy bear and the attention it received.

All it takes to flood them with it is having a marker and something to label – no art skill needed and on display in public without media involved.
Not so sure I’d like that written all over my world though, just sayin’.

It takes balls to do what Mr. Vilks is doing, but I’m curious what it has to do with the “democratic principle.”

Mohammhead’s head on a serpent might be more relevant, though the muzzies do hate dogs a lot, so there’s that.
