White House Credits ‘Let’s Move’ for Halting and Reversing Childhood Obesity Trend
Today the White House credited Michelle Obama’s three-year-old “Let’s Move” initiative with halting and even reversing a thirty year trend of increasing childhood obesity, a trend that has led to what the Centers for Disease Control has called an epidemic. A press release from the Office of the First Lady announced details of a “two day nationwide tour” at the end of the month to celebrate the third anniversary of the program that promotes exercise and healthy eating habits to young people. The press release also included a short history of the program (emphasis added):
Mrs. Obama launched Let’s Move! on February 9, 2010 to unite the country around our kids’ health and create real support for families to live healthier lives. Since then parents, business leaders, educators, elected officials, military leaders, chefs, physicians, athletes, childcare providers, community and faith leaders and kids themselves have stepped up to improve the health of our nation’s children.
Thanks to these efforts, families now have access to more information to make healthier decisions for their children. Young people now have more opportunities for physical activity in their communities. Food in schools has been dramatically improved. More Americans now have access to healthy, affordable food closer to home. And the national childhood obesity rate has leveled off, and even declined in some cities and states.
The press release does not include any data to bolster the claim.
Mrs. Obama’s nationwide tour will consist of stops in Clinton, Mississippi; Chicago, Illinois; and Springfield, Missouri. She will also make a pre-tour appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, to air on Friday, February 22.

It’s typical politics and nothing more. “Halting and reversing” is the same thing as saying “it might not turn out as bad as we would like to think.”
A kid that was projected to be 100 pounds overweight is now projected to be 98 pounds overweight. Of course there is no data, these are projections. When the kid reaches 101 pounds overweight, the previous projection of 98 pounds simply gets revised due to an unexpected number. The new revised number would be 103 pounds, so 101 is still less than 103. That equals a less heavy, more healthy kid. Even though the kid is heavier than the initial number.

When I worked for a major US bank, there was a project to integrate the computers and infrastructure from a recently acquired bank. We were on a weekly conference call I held to go over anti-virus and security when an email popped up in my inbox. It said that the project for this integration was complete and a success! I told those on the meeting about it and they got the email themselves shortly. Then I asked the person on my call, who was responsible for this integration, how many computers were still left. He said, “Just over 2,000.” But he was happy to know that he was now finished and could move onto his next project!

I have to give props to ThirdTwin for the Hispanic point. I’ve noticed a lot of the Hispanic kids are tubbos and the slow down in illegal immigration could be the magic behind the numbers.
Of course that assumes there were numbers.
My take, it’s total BS. Just like we don’t have a spending problem. The government takes 3 trillion dollars a year from us and they still overspend. The president hasn’t sent his legally required budget to Congress yet. The Senate hasn’t passed a legally required budget in going on 5 years now.
They just say it is so and then when faced with the facts, repeat the lie. It’s the same as in Roderick Rules where the dad plays the video of his son throwing a party and the kid says it isn’t him.
