Note From On High – The Elite Bloggers Speak

Home - by - February 18, 2013 - 14:07 America/New_York - 39 Comments

Most of you guys will notice that the ad in the lower right is gone. This was always a beta ad that went through many transformations as we worked with the agency to try and perfect it. Notes, observations, complaints and recommendations were all logged by the agency. They are a great company, and they will be working on tailoring an ad that can help us stay in business while the user experience does not diminish.

One thing is for sure,  IOTW does not sit on its heels. We are always looking to get better and better, and that includes taking some chances that might not be the popular thing at the moment. But in the end we get it right and you can always be reassured that we’re trying to create a positive user experience. After all, we’re here all day too.

The Live-Wire chat box in the sidebar seems to be a hit. We may expand upon that if user demand dictates that we should.

The editing capability for comments was a response to demand. That seems to be working out. The Bullpen is a definite hit.

Some of the aesthetic changes were a response to boredom, many might not even notice them, but “the staff” is certainly excited. Irony Curtain finally got the banner he always envisioned.

Irony would also like to tell you that we appreciate the comments and the criticism and that it’s an essential component for developing the best site we can. But I’m here to tell you that I hate the carping and the criticism and I know what you’re thinking before you even think it.

Yes, I know I’m a douchebag. See? I told you.

Thanks for bearing with us as we implement some fun changes.
Of course, we’ll never lose sight of the original goal we had for the site which was, and continues to be English Muffin Pizzas and Cream Soda On Demand.

Besides being the BEST website and the BEST commenters–I really like the fact that you don’t have to “sign-in” to comment. That has always been a huge positive for me. See–no criticism, no carping!

You said it, pal. We’ll never put up a barrier like the Sign-In-Register-Then-Look-For-An-Email-Click-That-Type-In-The-Captcha-Make-A-New-Password-You’ll-Forget-Crap that so many other sites use to discourage the free and open exchange of ideas. And to all you shy readers lurking out there who have never commented: Jump in! The water’s fine. If you’re nervous just use the alias STUDENT COMMENTER and other folks will give you plenty of room. – Irony

Thanks for this latest communiqué, BFH.

Overall, we are happy with the changes, particularly getting rid of the pop-up black box. (I couldn’t see the point of it since it didn’t link to anything.)
But re the ‘chat box’, I notice you’ve eliminated the ‘Guest’ option again.
I’m sure you have a good reason, but some of us are loath to register at any of the three ‘social networking’ sites.
So, instead of chatting, we will just grumble to ourselves. :)

As a representative of the Satisfied Commenters’ Union (SCU) we wish to convey our sincere appreciation for a “Difficult and Tricky Job Continuing To Be Well Done (As Always)”.

We will express our thanks in a more tangible way after receiving the special order certificate with a “for” line long enough to fit the category.

Thanks for the heads-up. Double thanks for doing whateve it is with the floating ad that no longer makes the site pita on mobile devices.

    Now. Where’s my cream soda?

People come here to see BigFurHat being BigFurHat. The site could be purple with yellow dots, and they would still come so that they bust a gut laughing.

I know it is all necessary, but all of the changes lately is kinda like that cheerleader with the great ass taking a month off to work on the sound booth equipment.

I’ve been told that the ad will not be back on mobile devices in its past incarnation, if at all.

The ad on the lower right may come back but with modifications that will be easier on the eyes, smaller and less obtrusive, and inside the widget line.
You’ll see what we mean if the ad comes back.
(Guys, ads are a fact of blogging life. We use tons of bandwidth and we don’t rattle the can. I’ve seen sites rattle the can when they do 5 posts a week. If the economy was better we might. But it seems hypocritical to be reporting on the damage Obama is doing to our economy, how he is bankrupting us and then ask for money from viewers that we know are hurting. We rather get the money from Gay Cruise Lines , Ladyboy Dating and Alan Grayson.)
(No I do not get the Gay cruise ads, or the Ladyboy ads, I just get a kick out of people who complain that we do have those ads when the ads are tailored to the viewer via cookies.)

@MaryfromMarin — In the Windows world, the trademark symbol may be assigned to keystrokes but it’s relative as to the font you are using. A custom font may not include all of the symbols.

There are two ways to do this. You can open Accessories, System Tools, and then Character Map. Choose your font then you have to go find the TM symbol and click on it. You will see a notation that tells you what the ALT code is. For the registered symbol (®) you would hold down ALT, then press, in order, 0-1-7-4 then release the ALT key. Not every font will have the TM symbol so it may not exist.

The other way is what I do. I just have a text file open in Notepad that has all kinds of stuff I like to use. I just copy and paste what I want into the reply box. I have musical notes ♪♫ , my blockquote tags, and the ™ symbol. I just copy them when other people use them and paste them into my text file. Then I always have them. It’s easier than trying to remember every ALT keycode combination.

I really don’t have a problem with ads on sites that I frequent. This is their career and they are entitled to get compensated for it. True, when the ad on the bottom of the page would be for something like Sign the petition to reverse Citizens United I would click through on those. I figure that IOTW getting more money from Al Franken is poetic justice.

It’s exciting to see the changes the site is going thru. I have not been able to finish the major site redesign like I planned due to serious health issues, but in the capable hands of BFH I rest easy. Everyone who works the site has been amazing and has a lot of patience with my situation.
In response to some emails I have received, yes I am still the owner of this site. I check it everyday I can. Thanksgiving’s everyone for your continued support.

One more note on characters. If you Click Computer > LocalDisk(C:) > Windows > System 32, look for charmap and drag it to your desktop, you can find all these characters and more inside it.

This site uses Courier New, so open character map, select COURIER NEW, Character set WINDOWS WESTERN.

™ is Alt0153 or just find it, copy it and paste it directly here.
