The Elephant in the Gun-Grabbers’ Room

Doug Ross

Violent crime in the United States peaked in 1991. Since then, 41 states have eased restrictions on concealed carry with 24 of those states adopting “shall issue” laws, which require the issuance of permits to qualified, law-abiding citizens.

In addition, the number of privately-owned guns has risen by more than 110 million.

And what has been the result?

[An] analysis of data within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System reveals 10 empirical and interrelated reasons why Mr. Obama’s assumptions are false and why his top two priorities are dead wrong:

1. The rates of gun-related homicide, suicide and accidental death have decreased by 44 percent, 19 percent and 69 percent respectively since 1993 (for all races and ages).
2. After declining substantially over 10 years, gun suicides rates have significantly increased each year since 2006 (for all races and ages).

Violent crime is a complex issue, but national data is clear that there is no positive correlation between liberalized concealed carry laws and increased violent crime.

The “blood in the streets” or “Wild West” scenarios just don’t play out. And the Gun-grabbers know it. They want Americans disarmed and will say and do anything to get their way. Don’t let them disarm you. They don’t trust gun owners and want our already powerful government to have even more power over you and your life. They want you 100% dependent on the gov.

These latest gun-grabbing efforts were precipitated by the unfortunate “mass killings”. See Chapter headed “Don’t let a crisis go to waste” in the handbook.
It’s bullshit and everybody knows it. (See black youth statistics.)
They’re just trying to gain some ground towards their ultimate goal, which is to disarm the populace.

And re this chart, it always makes me scratch my head when they quote statistics vis à vis suicides.
    They’re meaningless.
Anybody who really wants to commit suicide will find a way to do it, strict gun laws notwithstanding.

Some more facts for you (for 2010-2011).

So I did a bit of math with the crime stats from the FBI and some census data.

    1) 50% of all murder victims in 2011 were African-American.
    2) 52 % of all murderers in 2011 were African-American (if their race was known and a significant fraction was unknown).
    3) The murder rate (not including manslaughter) in the US in 2011 (4.1 per 100K) is half what it was in 1992, and the rate has been falling since 1992, its not an all at once thing.
    4) Given that African-Americans make up 14% of the US population and commit half of all murders, that implies…
    a) The murder rate for non-African-Americans (86% of the US population) is something like half the national average (about 2.3/100K) – about the same as that of Finland.
    b) The murder rate for African-Americans is about 15/100K – about like that of Mexico.
    c) African-American men ages 13-39 are about 2.4% of the population of the US in 2011 and account for an estimated 40% of all murders.
    5) About half of all murders in the US are committed with handguns (again, as of 2011).

Conclusion: Unless and until we control young urban Black males killing other young urban Black males we’re not going to significantly reduce murder rates in the US.

Opinion: Americans don’t believe giving up their fundamental right to armed self-defense is a price worth paying to stop street thugs engaged in the narcotics trade from killing each other at a high rate.

I just viewed statistics that show the leading cause of death in prison is suicide, and they don’t allow guns in prison — yet.

on a side note, the gun show in Little Rock, AR yesterday drew 3,000 people. That’s up about 1,000 from last year. But the gun prices have just about tripled in the last three years (thanks for that Barry). Ammo prices sucked just as much. I am happy to see my fellow citizens stocking up regardless of the high prices.

A gov’t can destroy an armed populace – but it’s a Hell of a lot more difficult – and dangerous.

Huh, so if guns can’t explain the increase in suicides starting in 2006 what might it be?

Say, you don’t think it could have something to do with the implosion of sub-prime lenders and the collapse of the mortgage market? Nah, that could only be a coincident. Shear chance. Its obviously Bushes fault.
