Algerian Hostage Crisis Proves Al-Qaida is NOT Dead

THE LID

By Barry Rubin

One of the main themes of President Barack Obama in discussing his foreign policy is to claim the success of having destroyed al-Qaida. The fact that this organization has just pulled off the seizure of more than 800 hostages at an Algerian oilfield is only the biggest out of dozens of examples that shows this claim is untrue. The number of hostages killed is still unclear after Algerian soldiers stormed the oil installation on January 19 and killed all of the terrorists.

Certainly, Algeria has had a long civil war with Islamists, including the local al-Qaida affiliate, but this was an international operation headed by a Nigerian. Moreover, al-Qaida has been very active in Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, and Mali, while showing continued capability to wage attacks elsewhere.

How, then, are we to understand al-Qaida’s survival and that fact’s relationship to U.S. policy?
There are two key points to be made.

First, al-Qaida was not designed to take over state power in countries. It is the Islamist equivalent of an anarchist group, that is, one focused more on destroying existing institutions than on staging a revolution, becoming the government, and fundamentally transforming states. That is, of course, the function of the Muslim Brotherhood, the contemporary equivalent of the Russian Bolsheviks who took over Russia in 1917.

There is nothing surprising in al-Qaida popping up, staging some attacks, and then becoming less visible or being repressed. That is the nature of such groups and their strategies. It is thus easy to claim victory over them. The historic role of al-Qaida and the September 11 attacks on America helped set the stage for the domination of Middle East politics by Islamists today. That’s pretty significant. Moreover, al-Qaida operates more by inspiring others to launch attacks rather than directly organizing them, which also makes wiping out the group a rather difficult thing to do.

The Mongol Khans knew how to decimate the Muzzies. When it became clear that the Persian Empire could not be trusted, the Ghengis Khan launched a campaign that almost wiped the Persians off the map. The Khans had no interest in occupying territory, they were interested in making sure no civilization could exist in that land to threaten them again.

The Crusaders launched multiple attempts to wipe out Islam and failed. Even the Ottomon Empire never really controlled the vast territory of the Sahara, they just went in and killed anyone and everyone in the various Arab tribes if they threatened anything the Ottomans held dear.

While we were fighting our Civil War, a Muslim extremist who called himself “The Mahdi” arose in what was then The Soudan, and launched his jihad down the length of the Nile and deep into “Darkest Africa”. His followers killed or enslaved most of the native tribes in Africa.

In fact, the African slave trade that the United states is so frequently denounced over was partially the fault of the Arab slave traders who captured and sold those slaves to the Americans. Slavery is an Arab/Muslim tradition that dates back centuries, and slavery is the only way to describe how Sharia Law dictates the treatment of women and girls.

When the Ottomans forfeited their Empire for backing Kaiser Wilhelm in WWI, it was left to the British and their allies to split the Ottoman Empire into sections they thought manageable, hence the divisions we have today.

The bottom line is that since Islam was founded it has been a scourge upon everyone else, and the only successful way of dealing with radical Islamists in history is to slaughter them without mercy, because that is exactly how they feel about us infidels.

One of these days it will finally dawn on people that it is us or them, and when the US withdraws from the world stage it puts us all at extreme risk. It is a matter of time until some jihadist commits yet another atrocity, likely hitting some easily identified “gun free” soft target. If our own maniacs can do it imagine what an Al Qaeda special operations team could accomplish.

And impeaching Obama after it happens will still be too late.
