Obama Results ‘Round the World
From Chieftain’s comment to Bullpen story by Jerry Manderin on the terrorist activity in Algeria.
Sorry, but I need to rant a bit about this so please bear with me. I am sick at heart and so angry I need extra blood pressure meds over the atrocity in Algeria.
And let us be clear. Hamlet was a tragedy. Algeria is an atrocity.
Shortly after Obama took office the US Navy stopped stationing an aircraft carrier task force permanently in the Mediterranean, and the ongoing shit storm in the Middle East and now Northern Africa is the direct result.
One of the reasons why Brother Leader Kadaffy kept his nose clean for the last 15 years or so is because (A) President Reagan kicked his ass all the way back to the stone age, and (B) we kept a carrier task group in the Med to make sure the cork stayed in the Libyan bottle.
I know about what I speak, because I spent the better part of 20 great years pounding around on 3″ of HY100 steel flight decks on five different carriers, including three different Nimitz class hulls. Ronald Reagan used to say that a Nimitz class carrier did not pay for itself sitting at the pier in Norfolk. Algeria is exactly what he was talking about.
Hosni Mobarak was no Prince, but the ready availability of US Navy fighter cover to back him up kept the Muslim Brotherhood from overthrowing him before 2012. When Obama pulled the carriers it marked the beginning of the end of Mubarac.
Bashar al Assad would not have been allowed to bomb his own civilians if there was a Nimitz class deck patrolling up and down his coast enforcing a no fly zone. But since that looks too much like supporting “the jeeeeeeewwwwwwwwssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss…” Obama cannot be seen opposing even the Assad regime.
Now we have this atrocity in Algeria, and nobody seems to be aware that it is the direct result of the withdrawal of US leadership and sea power, and the direct result of “leading from behind”.
Al Qaeda terrorists just tried what would have been unthinkable 20 years ago. The only reason the Algerians agreed to allow the presence of such an enormous facility packed with hundreds of foreign civilians is because there was confidence that they would have assistance via NATO and the US Navy in the Med should they ever need it.
Without any backup whatsoever, and with full knowledge that Algeria was on its own, the Algerian military acted in the manner they are known to operate, and minimized the casualties to Algerian citizens and soldiers as well as Algerian State property. In light of what has happened in Libya and Egypt, and what is continuing in Syria right now, nobody should be surprised that the Algerians decided to act decisively and with overwhelming force.
If the same situation were to occur in the United States, say Al Quaeda lay siege to and captured an entire nuclear power plant, and were attempting to cause a major nuclear release, does anyone doubt that the SEALS and/or other US Special Forces would be called in to act immediately, and without prior consultation with the UN?? (I do mean in a real world, not the Obama world…)
The bottom line on Algeria is that this atrocity is the direct result of the withdrawal of the United States from the world stage. In fact, the US has indeed always been the World’s policeman, and for goddam good reason. At one time, the first words out of a real President’s mouth at the first sign of trouble used to be “Where are the carriers?”. This (P)resident can only think about selling the hulls off for scrap to make into razor blades…in China of course…..
That is all.

Think of how peaceful and happy the world would be if Barack Fucking Obama had never been born.

Back in innocent days, you’d see stenciled ominously everywhere: “Ignore Alien Orders”.
Isn’t it appropriate to label much (down to the long lines at ammo counters across the land), with “Obama Built This” ?
Time’s a wasting.

Great post, Chieftain! And right on the money!
I’m very afraid that things are going to get much worse before they get better.
The Won will be desperately trying to complete his agenda before he devolves into an official lame duck.

Wow! I decided to check in during halftime, and found the rant I posted last night as a standalone article, and I am pleasantly surprised and humbled to be honored so here at IOTW. This has been one of my favorite websites since BFH and the boys cloned off of the People’s Cube and it has consistently continued to get better, and better, and better.
Thank You for a distinct honor. I’ve been online long enough to know this isn’t done very often, and I am extremely grateful for all of your support.
And for reference, the five decks I trod were USS Ranger (CVA-61) USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67), USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) (and yes, I Like Ike…), USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71, Plankowner) and USS George Washington (CVN-73, Plankowner).

EXCELLENT POST. I just learned SO much.
If anyone is interested, there is a podcast by veteran Bryan Suits called “Dark Secret Place on Demand,” and he did an episode yesterday on Algeria and Yemen which is very good. He gave some history lessons that brought me up to speed quickly.

@Chieftain–
The recognition is well deserved. Your comments (the TRUTH, not a rant) are right on the mark.
