    Ooooh, I loved that smell when I was a kid.

    And leaded gasoline too. Seriously. I used to hang my head out the car window when I was a kid and inhale the fumes when my dad was filling the car on warm days. I wonder now if I was supposed to be a smarter adult? ;-)

    @Debbie–

    The duck fits if it’s considered “fowl”.

    Can’t figure out the mitten though, so it IS probably “which doesn’t belong”. (Of course, it could be “fingerless glove”, but that’s really reaching.)

    One of those “I remember when” moments. Brings back memories of your fifth grade teacher making “copies” of today’s assignment to take home with you.

    The fire truck & camp fire was subliminal message for the movie Fahrenheit 451.

    Or

    The one beside the camp fire looks like a clowns with a star.

    So.. Firetruck shoots water {unwashed masses), campfire (burn something), clowns that favor stars. Hmm.. it just depends on that last symbol.

    (Finger paint on glue past has some side effects.)

    Do y’all think the education of today’s kids might be improved if they WENT BACK to the mimeograph, green chalkboards, wooden desks which stuck to your clothes on humid days, classrooms sans air conditioning and the “board” of education which hung from the principal’s office wall?

    Remember back whe coaches always taught US History, the gay math teacher kept well inside his closet, the only REAL perv was the art teacher, the girls always wore skirts (which touched their kneecaps), the boys who wore jeans to school were the exceptions made to the dress code because they were too poor to afford slacks, the best macaroni-and-cheese you had in your life was the school cafeteria’s, only boys took shop and only girls took home ec. and the topper: girls one-piece GYM SUITS which made even the ripest young beauty look plain?

    Sorry for rambling (my 66th is coming up), but you started it, BFH.

    Don’t feel bad about being of a “certain age”, CC. On my bookshelf right here I still have some old test papers from the sixties dittoed in purple ink. I forgot why I’m saving them. Worse yet, down in the basement I actually have a mechanical (Olympic) portable typewriter – the kind with a setting for cutting mimeograph stencils. I’m sure it will be valuable on eBay someday (not)…

    @Boobie – I’m about a decade behind you but I . remember wearing one of those one-piece gym suits, starting in fifth grade. I think they were phased out in high school. I thought the design was quite wonderful and it was so comfortable. I remember back then thinking about how it made us conscious of being girls.

    And, ahhh, mimeogragh machines. Cold January mornings, moving up to a new SRA book, four square at recess, home made food in the cafeteria, happy kids who knew their place in the community. Why do progtards want their kids to grow up too fast?

    Love all these memories. Boobie, I’m just a few years behind you so the images are very vivid. Had those atrocious gym suits — in the sickest shade of green you could imagine. And remember the teacher had one of those chalk holding devices so she could draw multiple lines on the board with one swipe?

    I went to grandparents day at my granddaughter’s school. I haven’t been in a classroom in decades and was stunned by the technology. They don’t have a black or greenboard. It is a giant touch sensitive computer screen. I wanted to stay after and play with the gadgets.

    But they still say the pledge — one chosen child leading over the P.A. every morning. I hope we don’t lose that precious relic.
