‘Not Just Sandy Hook: China’s Terrifying Knife Attacks’
As the gun-control debate resurfaces in the U.S., knife attacks at schools in China continue unabated.
In a grim coincidence, a 36-year-old man rampaged through a Chinese elementary school with a knife on Dec. 14, the very same day as the horrific attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, which killed 20 students.
Although they usually garner less media coverage, other incidents of violence appear to have similar roots.
The Chinese knife attack wounded 22 kids and an 85-year-old woman at Chenpeng village in the southern province of Guangxi. (Gun ownership is tightly controlled in China, where mass attacks usually involve men with a knife, cleaver, or machete.) The high number of casualties is just the latest in a string of school attacks, and it underscores inadequacies in the country’s antiquated—and in some places virtually non-existent—system for diagnosing and treating citizens suffering psychiatric distress.
I am in complete accord with the above graphic except for the section regarding justifiable homicides by police and citizens. It is contradicted by information compiled by the 2011 FBI UCR – Justifiable Homicides – Tables 14 (LEO)& 15 (Citizens)
The feds define a justifiable homicide in two ways: for police it is the killing of a felon in the line of duty; for private citizens it is killing a felon during the commission of a felony.
On average since 2007 there are 663 justifiable homicides each year (low of 643 in 2008, high of 682 in 2010).
Of these the police average 395 killings each year or 60% of the total: 321 with handguns, 28 with rifles, 9 with shotguns and 36 with an unspecified type of firearm.
For private citizens, an average of 267 justifiable homicides (40% of total) each year: averaging 164 with handguns, 10 with rifles and 19 with shotguns. Another 22 felons are reported killed per year with an unspecified type of firearm.
The AmericanGunFacts.com site states “criminals” instead of felons and I don’t know if that makes a difference. It also lists Gary Kleck as their source but they cite a study he did in 1991. Perhaps they extrapolated their data. I find Kleck to be a very reliable researcher and his work has stood up to a lot of scrutiny.
Kleck and Gertz also criticize their own results based on inaccurate responses to their surveys, but that holds true for all surveys, not just their own. In any event, the National Institute of Justice reported that there are about 1.5 million Defensive Gun Usage (DGU’s) in the US.
For more information see:
“Armed”, Kleck, Gary and Gertz, Marc J, 2001
“Guns in America: National Survey on Private Ownership and Use of Firearms”, National Institute of Justice Research, 1995
To clarify:
The National Institute of Justice reports that every year there are 1.5 million instances where a citizen feels the need to defend him or herself with a firearm.

Never let the facts get in the way of an agenda driven campaign to destroy the US Constitution and diminish your freedom.

Guess the Administration doesn’t believe that 80% of We the People won’t defend ourselves against them. Going to suck to be them.
