Forcing the medical industry to switch to digital records is nonsensical and expensive.
A number of studies and reports are filtering in showing that government-sponsored digital medical records have not reduced medical costs. A study in the journal Health Affairs found that offices with digital medical records were 40 to 70 percent more likely to order diagnostic tests — thus increasing medical spending. Doctors have also raised privacy concerns. Patient confidentiality is strictly regulated by the 1996 HIPAA law. Unauthorized releases could leave physicians vulnerable to lawsuits. But many of the existing software systems fail to protect confidentiality.

That was 1 of the first things my doc was bitching about, electronic records was supposed to lower cost.
The first thing he had to do was install a server network system at a 100k at his cost, and then had to hire an IT guy for 50k to sit around, fix the constant bugs and flaws, and constantly tell him how much more the upgrades, compatability issues, or security changes he needed to make.
In the mean time office visit cost went up……….if we had a dumbshit in charge who had even an inkling of how business works, he’d understand,……….businesses pass the cost on to the consumer.
Bet those Free Healthcare voters are going to be pissed whe they get the additional bill for the cost of services the gubment doesn’t cover because of healthcare reimbursemnt ceilings.

For a guy who blames ATMs for lost jobs, he sure is gung-ho about digitizing medical records. And like the first commenter said, he is not so gung-ho about releasing his own medical records.
