Journal News gun permit map used by burglars to target White Plains home?

A White Plains residence pinpointed on a controversial handgun permit database was burglarized Saturday, and the burglars’ target was the homeowner’s gun safe.

At least two burglars broke into a home on Davis Avenue at 9:30 p.m. Saturday but were unsuccessful in an attempt to open the safe, which contained legally owned weapons, according to a law enforcement source. One suspect was taken into custody, the source said.

The gun owner was not home when the burglary occurred, the source said. The victim, who is in his 70s, told Newsday on Sunday that he did not want to comment while the police investigation continues.

“The police are doing a full investigation,” the man saidthrough a partially opened front door.

There was broken glass in the backyard Sunday and a ladder leading up to a second-story window. Neighbors on the street of modest, Colonial homes said they had heard about the burglary.

The homeowner’s name and address were included recently on the controversial interactive map of gun permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties published on The Journal News’ website.

Neighbor John Mascia said he thought the gun permit database should not have been published.

“I could [not] care less what they have in their home,” Mascia said.

Police are investigating what role, if any, the database played in the burglars’ decision to target the home, the law enforcement source said.

Damn good the homeowner had a gun safe. I like what Judge Jeanine had to say about the list and its publishers.

She also notes that in her 30 years in law and as a judge, she has only seen one murder done with a legally owned gun.

If the burglers say the map was used can Gannet be sued for complicity in this and any other crime that used the map?

Dadof3, I bet they can find evidence on the perp’s computer, or in the bottom of the birdcage.

Sure, why couldn’t the paper be named in a suit? They’re the deepest pockets in the story. And even more compelling is the fact of their hostile disregard for the privacy and safety of lawful citizens. A mediocre lawyer can make the case that the paper’s entire motivation was driven by a desire for retribution against guns and their owners and their “outing” of legal gun owners fulfilled that mission. It was cheap, lazy and cowardly to go after legal gun owners. I wonder what kind of security perimeter they would have in place of they’d have published the names and addresses of criminal gun users?

My elderly Mother is on the list. She couldn’t give up my dead Father’s pistol that he cherished. She followed the law, applied for a permit, wrapped up the gun in a box, tucked his hunting rifles away in the back of the closet and donated all of Dad’s ammo to the local police department. We haven’t seen the gun since 1984. Now, we are adding more layers of security to my Mother’s home. All a criminal needs to do is look up my Mother’s age and target her easily. This is very upsetting. I sent a certified letter to the General Counsel of Gannett Co. in Va which is the parent company of the Journal News and have received no reply. The Journal News wants to pit neighbor against neighbor and take advantage of the Newtown shooting. It backfired, pardoned the pun. Everyone in Westchester and Rockland Counties who are gun owners or not are now endangered due to the reckless data dump by the Urinal News. I cannot find a connection b/w Gannett and Washington, DC except that the CEO’s husband is the largest government contractor in Va – Calibre. They are all democrats based on the public sites on political donations. Gannett also dumped data thru one of their publications in Wisconsin. They made public the names and salaries of Teachers etc in the School system in one area and plan on expanding. This is wrong. This is not journalism. The gun map is 20% inaccurate according to the Rockland County Clerk. Please don’t stop covering The Journal News until they take that damn map down. Thank you!

    Let the unintended consequences begin!!

It ALWAYS happens with liberal do-gooders (and not-so-do-gooders) meddling into our lives. Do us all a favor, spend your time and energies looking for and bottling, unicorn farts, and stay the f*ck out of our lives!

@mb – so sorry to hear that your grandmother has been put at risk by these asshats’ “gotcha” tactics. I hope you and others are able to sue Gannett into oblivion.

Irony Curtain, After seeing several homes here in Dallas (Herschel Walker’s being amongst them) get their safes cut up by some kind of torch over the Christmas holiday weekend, I can only surmise these guys were not really prepared for safe busting.

Prepared meaning knowing what to actually do to succeed.

No safe I know of can defeat what they used here in Big D.

So now the publisher and her peeps hire bodyguards???

If I were in the private security or executive protection business and they called me, I’d simply say…”I’m sorry but looks like YOU’RE FUCKED!”

Maybe with some luck someone that’s good at LONG DISTANCE shooting will make their lives hell.

Not that anyone here couldn’t have found it, but here’s a handy-dandy source (which I think in this case is credible) of Gannett’s assets:

There’s a claim that the list is incomplete. Add your own info if you will. Though money is no compensation for the loss of privacy – or should it happen, injury or loss of life – they have extraordinarily deep pockets just sitting there getting lazy, compounding interest.
