Weird Sounds Of Frozen Sea In Odessa, Ukraine

    Maybe the ice is cracking from the wave action underneath.

    When water freezes it expands. As water under the frozen surface expands as it freezes, cracks appear and the ice chunks rub against each other.

    The noises are also reminiscent of the noise that snow makes when you walk on it during snot-freezing weather (sub freezing, around 10 degrees or below).

    Going under the ice in Scuba gear, is the coolest diving I have ever done. First it freaks you out because you can’t surface just anywhere. You have to have a line with you to find the open hole that is the only way out. Somewhere I have a photo shot from above the ice of me under the ice. A long, long time ago.
    We had film in the camera. Not digital.

    Up snowmobiling in N. Wisconsin where there are many small lakes connecting trails. We sometimes stop out on the lake and shut down, with complete silence on the lake because the snow absorbs and background noise. As people quiet down and ears adjust to the silence you can hear the ice POP and actually follow the noise across the lake.

    Now imagine for a moment that you are part of the crew of Sir Earnest Shackleton’s 1914 Antartic wooden sailing vessel “Endurance”, that was trapped in the Antarctic ice and slowly crushed and eventuallylost. Imagine trying to live onboard the ship for as long as possible with that noise constantly around you, occasionally accented with the violent snapping of a 12 x 12 oak timber.

    OBTW, the story of that voyage and how the whole crew made it out alive is well worth the read…
