I have a niece who came of age a handful of years ago. In following the entrenched feminist trend for lack of knowing any better, she and I would go round and round about how her feminist approach to life was not going to bring her any true happiness. I kept telling her that contrary to what the media was feeding her about it being ok to go through life looking and acting like a hooker, young men had not evolved into having any honest respect for that kind of girl.
And as long as she believed young men were completely hip to and accepting of her expression of feminism in its skankiest form, she would never have a long-term, respectful, loving and sincere relationship with any young man. Certainly not with an honorable young man.
She bumped and grinded her way on this sordid path to no where for a couple of years with an endless parade of icky boys who cared not one iota for her. One day she recalled her old aunt’s admonitions, scrubbed off all the skanky make up, did her hair in a softer fashion, put on some feminine clothes and shortly thereafter a very nice and honorable young man took notice of her, asked her out on a dinner date, and they are still together a couple of years later.
It’s too bad that Ms Wurtzel failed to heed the wise words of her grandmother, mother or auntie if she ever had one all those years ago. I’m glad my niece had her lightbulb moment before she had gotten on too far in the wasteland of living a feminist, ‘it’s all about me’ lifestyle. I know she is a lot happier today. And that makes me happy for her.

What’s too bad is that she is a human being with a brain but has wasted it on 60s feminism. She fell (and hard) for all of the Steinem-esque claptrap that ruined many lives. Now she realizes that her life is not as fulfilled as promised. Oh well. You’ve come a long, baby — it was your right to choose and now you’re telling us you’ve done nothing for decades, but somehow, feminism is still wonderful.
Answer this question: If your feminism is so great and grand and wonderful, why are there millions of happy, fulfilled housewives in this country?

I have no children, but have had the pleasure of being involved in the lives of those born to many of my friends. As the young ladies have come of age and prepared for college, I have always admonished them with the following warning:

Well worth the read to realize just how many more like her there are out there in the general population. The current crop under media cultivation are all fans of Snookie and Honey Boo Boo and one can only wonder what kind of emotional train wrecks all of them will be as they approach 50.

Out of curiosity, I read the “whine” in the New York mag linked in the article, and it’s so self-indulgent and adolescent, I’m amazed she has actually done as well as she has.
