White House aides fear there will be thousands of empty seats at Obama’s inauguration

Crowds may have flocked to the National Mall to see President Obama make history in 2009, but the team behind the president’s 2013 inauguration bash later this month are bracing themselves for a ton of empty seats.
The ceremony that Washington will stage in a few weeks won’t be the historic affair it was in 2009, when nearly 2 million people flocked to the Capitol o watch Obama take the oath of office.
This time, District of Columbia officials expect between 600,000 and 800,000 people for Obama’s public swearing-in on the steps of the Capitol on Monday, January 21.
Two weeks before the big day, plenty of hotel rooms still haven’t been booked. Four years ago, some hotels sold out months in advance.
There will be just two official inaugural balls this year, both at the Washington Convention Center, rather than 10 official balls at multiple locations around town.
The pair of celebrations are the lowest number since 1953, according to the New York Post.

I read the linked article, and the recurrent theme is that people could not afford to go. I find that funny – several groups were stridently passionate that Obama was right for the country, but fewer of these people have the money to attend the inauguration than in 2009.
The irony will be lost on MSNBC.

In 2008, I let the mother of a friend of mine stay at my home for the inauguration. The media had totally overhyped the event, and while there were LOTS of people here, many could not afford the astronomical costs of the hotels. It was agonizing as she wanted to keep Obama coverage on the tv 24/7, and she had the nerve to bring a friend and the two of them just prattled on the whole time about the historic election and what a great president he was going to be. It was agonizing.
They had their feelings hurt when the DNC screwed up the “color” fiasco on the mall. You needed to have certain color passes to get on the mall and the passes they had were attached to a metro entrance that had been shut down by the city and they couldn’t access the mall otherwise because the city came up with the stupid system to limit the number of people on the mall–can’t have anyone wanting to put a cap in Obama’s ass. They were trapped in the metro and then they stood in the cold and dreary weather for hours. The DNC promised the purple holders a commemorative DVD and a tee-shirt as a result of their inconvenience. Needless to say, she never got either.
She asked if she could stay at my place again. The answer was an unequivocal, Hell to the No!
