A haze of smoke hangs over the city skyline in Athens, early Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013. The cloud is the result of a massive switch to wooden stoves and fireplaces for heating as many households, already hard hit by the economic crisis, can not afford to buy heating oil after the cash-strapped government decided to harmonize taxes on heating oil and diesel fuel, leading to a 40 percent  rise in the price of heating oil.

At this rate of “progress” humanity will be reduced to a few roving bands of hunter-gatherers living in caves in 50 years.

Obviously, the Greek bureau weenies haven’t heard of the San Francisco Bay Area’s glorious Fireplace Fascist Patrol (AKA: Bay Area Air Quality Management) where THEY decide if and when you may burn wood in your own fireplace and fines imposed on Felonious Fireplace Fugitives. Those Greek socialists aren’t taking full advantage of their unwashed, wood burning masses.

If Grayscape’s right, and I believe he is, let’s get to it. I’m tired of busting my ass. I’d much rather beat the shit out of some hippies and take their shit.

    @conservative cowgirl–

Maybe you could get a “finder’s fee” if you pass this idea along to the Greek government.

BTW, just how far DOES the BAAQMD extend? I knew it covered us, but you too?

And no more “warnings” this year. They’re going straight for the fines.

Screw fireplaces and wood burning. I walk down my turf and all these people stinking up the area so bad I’ll soon have to wear a gas mask. When the air isn’t moving, it can be really nasty. This isn’t 1813, quit acting like it you yuppies who do burn for fun and hot romance, ugh.

That’s not smog, it’s smoke. I use to work in Lost Angeles and had to breathe that shit every day.

Wood stoves cannot be beat, and a fire place warms the heart too. People are just too fckn lazy these days to cut and split firewood. My neighbor is close to 80 years of age and still cuts his own trees on his own land, and splits all his wood with a hand maul or an axe. That’s considered part of being a man around here. The way things have been going, they will probably try to take that right away from us.

No, I’m back to give you the last word Brad. I’m a hypocrite because I wanted some kind of social life (another social misfit like yourself, who can’t get along with anybody and has to vent here to get attention, aren’t you glad you found this place?). I come here because I hate liberals and those who don’t share my views ON CERTAIN ISSUES. Let me tell you; all the things you hate: SS, Medicare,Medicaid, down the the food stamps and free phone. I get. That’s right. I’m retired and grateful that your tax dollars and the MONEY I PUT INTO THE SYSTEM FOR DECADES are doing for me part of what they are meant to do. I don’t like lot of the shit that’s going down these days, so much is wrong, but I’m human and in my own situation. I’ll do what I have to do to survive, just like you. Now bye.

I bought our house in 2007, 1550 sq ft upper level.

In March of that year I got my first gas bill. $483.00 for one month!!

Now March is a shoulder month so it can go from 5F one day to 50F the next, so I’m not heating everyday. That summer I pulled out the gas unit, called the city to cut the gas line to my house and bought a wood burning stove. I heat the entire house on wood from Oct to April at a cost of about $300.00 per season, that’s about $43.00 a month!

I also have a fire place in my master bedroom with an efficient fire grate made by grate wall of fire™

I buy my wood by the tandem, me and the boys cut and split by hand, no splitter. The wood lasts me about two and half winters and it is seasoned for at least one year before using, the remaining wood is thus seasoned for two years, etc for the remaining wood, so it is nice and dry and burns clean. I have little in the way of smog.

For a family of eight, and a single income, it becomes a question of economics. I also enjoy the ‘feel’ of a house heated by wood, it’s like ski resort.

And oh, I forgot to mention. Yes the cost is directly related to the socialism in this province. Heating by electricity, gas or oil is insane, thus the wood.

And as a added benefit to all those eco-nuts out there, wood is a renewable resource!! so bite me when you get all self righteous and smug about burning trees!

Not that there are any eco freaks here….except the trolls.

@Mary from Marin, I believe it is still voluntary compliance in SMC. They have the Pious Patrol handing out literature about not burning wood in fireplaces. I doubt we are too far behind the enforcement nonsense, though.

Knew a guy from the Phillipines, telling me how Ferdinand Marcos dealt with Envirowhackolists.

A bunch of these stonie non working idiots thought being americanized and protesting the gubment and fossil fuels with more environmental laws, that they could get what they wanted just like the occupoopers and stonies of the 60′s.

So Marco bowed down to them, in the coldest part of winter he shut off all electricity and the natural gas. Within days after people got done burning their fences, shrubs, trees and furniture, he turned it back on.

The very next time these bozos protested, the people ganged up them and beat the shit out of them to get them to shut their pieholes……protesting problem solved.

I’d like to see a little of that here, instead of people rolling over to these POS.

Mary, Na I wasn’t hot. If you live in an area where a lot of people heat with wood, occasionally you can get a nose full. A conservative would think, damn I must be down wind, I should move up wind. A liberal thinks, These bastards need to stop burning would.
