From teeming Times Square to an Asian capital hosting its first public New Year’s Eve countdown in decades, the world looked to the start of 2013 with hope for renewal after a year of economic turmoil, searing violence and natural disasters.

Fireworks, concerts and celebrations unfolded around the globe to ring in the new year and, for some, to wring out the old.

I know I’m going to come off as a wet blanket, but I am not filled with hope and excitement over 2013. And no, it isn’t because I’m turning fifty this year — nothing so petty and small as that. I am filled with dread and discouragement. This used to be the greatest, freest nation in the world. And now, what are we? We the People have to sit by and wait for a handful of temporary politicians to determine our fate. We are no longer a nation of individuals who succeed and fail based on their own efforts. Instead we are prisoners, hostages, whose fates are no longer our own. Instead, this handful of temporary politicians sit behind closed doors and are tacitly given the reins over our lives, our livelihoods, our incomes, our futures.

    This is not America.

And I come into 2013 not buzzing with anticipating, but heavy with dread; not eagerly awaiting the ball to drop, but cringing as we wait for the other shoe to drop.

I hate that my liberty is being held hostage by these temporary politicians.

2013 does not bring hope, but more dread.

And you guys, that pisses me off to no end.

    Thumb up +3

Was anybody else watching the Dick Clark ABC show around 9:30 EST when Jenny McCarthy had standing behind her 4 Muslimas in head bags? Never saw them again after that but it was rather odd.

I agree with you Diann. I was left feeling dread and very depressed. I noticed too that there were no fireworks going off in the neighborhood like there was last year. I too am not looking forward to this year or the next four. I wake up every morning what the heck happened. I have two young kids and am very down about their future as well.

    Thumb up +2

Stampede at fireworks display injures more than 100.

Remember when that activity was limited to cattle?
