Update on the Journal News
I just got off the phone with a gentleman in the newsroom and he’s told me that other than their official boilerplate statement they still have nothing to say about the publishing of the names of legal gun permit owners.
They have no ombudsman, no public relations director, no spokesman that is willing to dialogue with their readership.
What a friggin rinky-dink operation. Or maybe they’re not rinky-dink, maybe they’re just completely shiftless, spineless, ball-less and wormy? Either way, it’s a crap periodical.
I just wanted to let you know that I’m still seeking a follow-up interview after last week’s conversation. I want to address some points about these records being public.

Fur. I wrote to the editor last week voicing my objection. They just ignored me.

Maybe you could get them to post a comment here so some of the readers could … interact with them and ….. exchange ideas?

Class action law suit … as much as they suck for the individual I feel it may be the only avenue. I don’t know about NY law, bu here in PA the use of permit records is illegal. Couple years back a county sheriff send voter mail to gun permit people and was taken down for using the information for a simple mailing.
The permit holders should sue. Or better yet the non permit holders should, because of being indentified as possible targets for home invasion.

Kinda curious. How long does it take to get a FOIA response in NYS, and during the holiday season? Seems the info was at hand, and parsed rather quickly after the CT catastrophe.
Not saying conspiracy at all, but seems to me they had this info on hand, just waiting for the right time to spring it.

It would be great if two class action law suits were filed,
One for exposing the gun owners, the second for exposing non gun owners to higher crime rates.

When I first moved to Westchester 9 years ago, I took out a subscription to this paper. It’s a shit paper and I cancelled the subscription, they used to call me every so often to renew but I just told them no way. They are trying very hard to be Westchester’s version of the NYT and that’s the demographic they are going for.
It’s a real fishwrap.

BFH, thanks for pursuing this. I hope outing conservatives won’t be the last gasp effort of failing lib publications all over the place.
Here in a very different state, I’m thinking of asking this guy I know, an ex military who owns lots of guns, how to get one off the bks. I’m not a criminal, but a criminal government makes everyone think in those terms.

Doug Ross has up an excellent post about this topic (and thanks for letting us know about your follow-up). In it he quotes a commenter from LI, who makes some very good points. To me, the most salient was:
“Moderating our conduct while the country is still on this side of violence will not prevent things going from bad to worse. Things are going to get worse even if we become martyred saints. Our restraint in the face of ongoing attacks merely removes restraints on the conduct of those who seek the destruction of our country and Constitution. If their escalations are only met with feeble responses on our part, they are encouraged to push the envelope until they reach the point of violence.
So long as no law is broken [after all, that is the standard of combat that they have set; akin to say the real rules on the use of poison gas in warfare] then hit back twice as hard. Make them deal with their families and their neighbors being angry at them. And publicly out the nature of their biases in every thing they publish. Keep in mind that just recently the State got the power to wiretap, investigate, and arrest people without warrant of probably cause. Do you think that they are going to limit what they dig up in the name of “decency”? Look at their record.”
I’m thinking of composing and sending notice to the employee’s neighbors whose information was made public. Shunning was soo yesterday. Maybe not.
