A high-school counselor has sued the Houston Independent School District because, she claims, she was fired for truthfully reporting that officials at her school regularly inflated grades and graduation rates in order to receive a coveted “Acceptable” rating from state regulators.

The frenzy to graduate enough students included providing 40 hours of credit for failing students who attended a four-hour service at a local Baptist church, Courthouse News Service reports. The pastor was a school district employee.

Long-troubled Sam Houston High School hired the counselor, Sabrina Norman, in June 2008. She came to the school with roughly three decades of experience, and her job was to schedule classes for students. In the course of her employment, she began to notice a rash of excessive student absences.

… her school regularly inflated grades and graduation rates in order to receive a coveted “Acceptable” rating from state regulators.

When my oldest was in high school, he spoke to a teacher whose job it was to winnow through the STAR results computer cards and remove any that looked suspicious. You see, the students would fill in the little bubbles to make various shapes, such as fish, birds, whatever.

Those tests were taken real seriously. *cough* And to have a teacher remove some just proves that those tests scores are much lower than you think and the school your child attends is not doing as well as you think.

If it wasn’t for private schools, this country wouldn’t be in 17th place in the world. We’d be in 27th place.

    Thumb up +3

I wonder what congressional district Sam Houston High is in? Oh, wait it’s a Democrat seat, created by redistricting and in it’s first election the dem current incumbant won with 73%. I guess it’s not all that surprising the school is such a screw-up. In any event, good for the teacher in exposing this fraud.
