MEET AUBREY IRELAND – SHE HAS ISSUES WITH SO-CALLED ‘HELICOPTER PARENTS!’

Dudes and Dudettes…have any of you ever heard the term ‘helicopter parents’ before? Sure don’t know about all of you, but yesterday was the first day yours truly has ever heard that term used before…I must really be behind the times and such.

Nevertheless, here are a few reports about this story, the first is a shortened version…the third link will have a much more detailed report that should be read, including pictures.

This is via FNI, you can watch a video of lawyers debating this by clicking link if you desire.:

Do you know any helicopter parents, or are you perhaps guilty of being one? Well listen up! In a bizarre stalking case, a college student in Ohio took legal action against her overbearing parents with a restraining order.

Aubrey Ireland claims her parents would drive 600 miles from Kansas to her school in Ohio to check on her. She says they accused her of illegal drug use, promiscuity and mental illness. They even made her put keyloggers on her computer to keep track of all the keystrokes she was making. Think it can’t be any worse? Ireland alleges she had to leave Skype on some nights so her mother could see that she was in her dorm sleeping.

After the college senior broke off contact with her parents, they stopped paying her tuition. The University of Cincinnati stepped in by paying for her last year of school. She was able to convince a judge that her parents were stalking her and was granted a restraining order.

Ireland said in a statement, “It’s just been really embarrassing and upsetting to have my parents come to my university when I’m a grown adult and just basically slander my name and follow me around.

Speaking of “illegal drug use, promiscuity and mental illness”,

Does anyone know the whereabouts and condition of the Secretary of State?

As the parent of a college senior, I try really hard to afford him the dignity that he has earned.

I guess this girl’s parents either don’t remember that they were once that age, or else do remember, and are admitting that they were as stupid and deceitful as they assume their daughter is.

I wonder who is footing her college? She can easily get a job and pay her own way. She can also drop out of sight, or tell her parents to leave her alone and break off all communication with them. The last idea would be a hard one to swallow as a parent, but it does sound like they are smothering her to death. Some ties have to be cut somewhere.

I read the story (as well as the story behind the restraining order) and there was precious little comment from the parents. It seems that Ms. Ireland was afforded numerous opportunities to speak her mind and make her accusations but her parents had very little chance to respond. I’m not suggesting that she is lying but before I’d pass judgement on her parents I’d want to hear more from them as perhaps Ms. Ireland has been enjoying the spotlight and support so much so that she’s exaggerating her parents interference. It’s happened before.

So… her parents held a gun to her head and forced her to install the keyloggers? Or was it that they broke into her dorm room and did it themselves? No, she took their money up front in exchange for their conditions. She could have had them removed by campus security at ANY time she felt threatened. And if she felt their conditions really were unacceptable, perhaps she could have gotten off her dead backside, lived her own life, and maybe paid for things… herself?! What a foreign concept!

I read the article, and if true, then the parents seemed a little over the top. However, any problem should be easily fixed. Pay for your own stuff.

Don’t want mom and dad monitoring your computer? Buy your own computer. Don’t want mom and dad looking over your shoulder while at college? Pay for your own tuition, room and board. A senior in college is usually 21 or older – if you don’t like the “helicoptering,” then don’t accept the ride.

One of my first employers was notorious for providing employees “benefits” in lieu of cash raises. Buy a car, lend you the down payment for a house, or purchase what you want – that was your salary increase. Sounds good, but if you want to leave, you lose these things. I turned them down and left – one of the few intelligent things I did when I was younger.
