A Tax Lesson
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100…
If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this…
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7..
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that’s what they decided to do..
The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve ball. “Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20″. Drinks for the ten men would now cost just $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men? The paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share?
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.
So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by a higher percentage the poorer he was, to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using, and he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay.
And so the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% saving).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% saving).
The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% saving).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% saving).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% saving).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% saving).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings.
“I only got a dollar out of the $20 saving,” declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,”but he got $10!”
“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a dollar too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!”
“That’s true!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get $10 back, when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!”
“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison, “we didn’t get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!”
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, boys and girls, journalists and government ministers, is how our tax system works. The people who already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier

I like it the changes. The only thing I would love to see is on of those calenders off to the side, where you can click whatever day you want and get the full days postings… Especially after you went to only ten threads on the front page.
Good idea. Great idea. I’ll look for that plug-in.

BigFurHat
December 30th, 2012
Maybe I owe an explanation.
You know the graphic called – “This Tie Brings Out the Purple in His Lips” in the sticky graphic displayer?
Right now it is leading the day in clicked views with over a thousand clicks.
In the “good old days”, iOTW would work like this:
I, or wolverine or any of us, would work all day on a picture and put it up. Thousands of people would look at it and it would slowly move off the front page within 8 hours and be memory-holed.
Being able to view it without clicking on it means it does nothing for iOTW. It’s as if we never did it.
Now multiply that by 4 or 5 graphics a day.
People landing at iOTW can scroll through 6 graphics, look at them all and leave and it registers as one view.
That cannot continue.
The graphic viewer forces people to click it if they want to see it.
That helps us. It also automatically brings up the comments in order to stimulate feedback and give the artist a little interaction for their effort.
It also keeps the art front and center and viewable to people who visit every 2 or 3 days and not daily.
Sorry if a mouse click is an inconvenience, but it is the difference between iOTW existing or not existing.
As far as “reader submitted links” is concerned.
It is absolutely no different than sticky posts, other than the readers are controlling the content, and you have to click a button to see the links.
iOTW authors do 30 posts a day. There is no reason for us to do sticky posts as well, particularly when readers were beginning to leave links in the comments anyway.
The reason for sticky posts was because we needed to put as much info above the fold as possible because we were forced to limit the amount of posts visible on our landing page. It was killing our load time, chewing bandwidth, and people seemed to be lost when they scrolled to the bottom, continuously asking us how to access a post that was posted in the morning, even though the links were at the bottom.
So we put the links at the top.
Then the issue became. when people land on iOTW they see a bunch of links and are going to think we are an aggregation site, when we are really an original content site.
SO, graphics display at the top, a link to reader submitted stories underneath it.
and then iOTW Classic right underneath that.
Sorry, I’ve been up for 29 hours straight. If scrolling down 2 1/2 inches to get to
the good ol days is a really tough task, I really don’t know what I can do for you.
These changes aren’t to annoy you. It’s so we can stay in business.
I really don’t think these are radical changes that should cause anyone to get overly nervous.
And frankly, we can’t run iOTW catering to a complaining reader that has simultaneously complained about the E-MAIL THIS STORY button while asking in the comments every few weeks, “is there a link to this story? How do I e-mail it?”
Sorry if I’m being insulting. i need s;eep/

@MaryfromMarin,
Thank you for reading my account of the other day. My husband and I have been deeply reflective since that day. We have been in a kind of melancholy stupor since. I have lain in bed at night shedding tears over those boys and the deadly serious trouble they have brought into lives and their bodies.
I had to compress the details of the story to make it readable to iOTWers. The scene was much more highly charged and emotional than I was able to convey in a brief format. More things were said, more behaviors exhibited. More things revealed that made this event so incredibly powerful to those involved and to me personally upon deeper reflection about how and why God introduced me to this young man 7 months prior and why He bought us together again on that fateful day 2 days after Christmas. There are no coincidences in life. Everything has meaning.
As for the changes at iOTW – you are right. I will probably adapt. May not like it at first, dang it. But we’ll see. I’ll keep an open mind.
The best thing for you to do is write about it, uncompressed, and let us post it.
If you want to do that, e-mail to me at bigfurhat.mail@gmail.com

@Menderman One thing to keep in mind, is that load time and page views have a lot to do with a blog’s search engine page rank – as well as external links.
By making people click the pics up top, they will get many more page views per visit. The 10 postings will decrease the load time, and the user submitted links will give the blog a broader link diversity…
There is a method to his madness. More people will hit IOTW because of the changes…
I hate change as much as the next guy, but sometimes it is necessary.

Way less on the number of posts each day.

Keep in mind however that the dollar lost a lot of purchasing power since 2008.
I’d like to see those charts priced in gold.

Colt and Browning kicked ass too.

December 31st, 2012
Dagney, That doens’t matter does it. It’s all relative until we jump back on the Gold Standard, right?
Dagney
December 31st, 2012
No, my friend. It matters nonetheless.
Gold is money, pure money, hard money.
The value of gold is independent; it is sef-referential. A US gold standard might boost the demand for gold, and thus its price in USD; but so could a war with Iran or an agressive new policy from China, or just another banking crisis.
The big problem with gold is the same as with gun: massive, arbitrary taxes on gold (like me), or a buy-back stratagem FDR-style.
The USD vsalue is relative to gold; gold’s value ain’t relative to the USD. Gold is the currency of all currencies.
Dagney
December 31st, 2012
Gold is to money what a gun is to the Constitution.
Dagney
December 31st, 2012
The dollar could crash, and your hard gold will have remained all of its value.
Bad Brad
December 31st, 2012
Dagey, ur missing the point, right now, domestically, it’s all the same. Come on now, don’t start the freaken parallel universe shit on me. Come a point in time, it’ll all be worthless.
Dagney
December 31st, 2012
How could your hard gold coins become worthless if the USD crashes? That’s ridiculous!
No Brad: the value of gold lies in itself.
Bad Brad
December 31st, 2012
Dagney, You are totally missing the argument. Are we currently on the Gold Standard? NO.
Dagney
December 31st, 2012
Brad,
It’s not gold that has become expensive in the last decade; it’s the US dollar that lost a lot of its purchasing power.
What you can buy with an ounce of gold in 1999 is the same (all things being equal) as now.
Priced in gold, a barrel of oil in the 1950s is the same as now.
Dagney
December 31st, 2012
I am on the gold standard.
Here’s the point: Anybody allocating a sizeable chunk of its wealth into hard gold coins IS DE FACTO on a gold standard.
The way Obama-Bernanke prints money does not matter from this view-point.
Bad Brad
December 31st, 2012
In other words the outrageous price of gold has not really changed. The dollars is just worth that much less. But currently we are not on the gold standard, so if you make 70% on your money some where, you still have 70% more buying power. But that will eventually all catch up. It has to.
Freaken parallel universe shit
December 31st, 2012
You mean, the price of gold has to go down?
No way, not as long as those thugs are in the White House.
They will PRINT, AND PRINT AND PRINT.
“In other words the outrageous price of gold has not really changed. ”
The prince of gold in USD has changed, because the Dollar has been devalued by an expansive monetary policy.
But the value of gold in cattle or in ammunition or in corn or in oil has remained very constant.

It’s taking a hella longer for this site to load in with all the new fangled things you’ve done. I don’t like constant change for change’s sake but if it helps this site stay affloat then so be it.

Those thugs are raping We The People by devaluating the currency: wage-workers and oldsters on fixed-income pensions are suffering the most.
So much that a lot of them will have to go back to work.
What is tricky is that there is 2 simulteous lines:
1) global DEFLATION, deflation
2) massive inflation in virtue of money printing
So far, hyper-inflation has not kicked in in the USD because inflation has been happening in China (they import a lot of US papers!).
Freaken parallel universe shit
December 31st, 2012
The Arab ‘spring’ has been triggered by inflation, mostly. That was the oil that allowed the imams to set the region on fire.
As are virtually any riots in China (except when related to the muzzies).

Don’t get me wrong: the price of gold in USD is volatline; I’m talking basic trendline.
A Euro-crisis could trigger a huge demand for the USD, strenghtening the Dollar, thus diminishing the price of gold in USD.
Yes, that’s possible. But it would only be a flash.
Any Euro-crisis will affect the US badly.
