I’ve already seen it once this year, and will watch it again, probably tomorrow (today). Great movie.
Darrin McGavin’s character was so much like my own Dad.
Right down to his ongoing feud with the old coal furnace.

A true classic — reminds us of a simpler time when the threat of “that will shoot your eye out” or “there are starving children in China” meant something to us.
Merry Christmas to all at IOTW!!!

I watched the BB rifle scene and it made me go out and shoot a bunch of people. Nice going, TBS!

My wife HATES that movie so it’s not on our Holiday watch list.
My Dad would not allow us boys to have a BB gun. His attitude towards them was that they were only good for killing little birds and shooting out windows, BESIDES putting your eye out (BB’s are notorious for “rebounding” when they hit something hard).
From a very young age using a single shot .22, we were taught firearm safety – respect for the gun AND the game we used them for. Many years those rabbits fed us through the winter, until fishing season opened.

@ Norman
My dad was just like that character too!
I remember him rooting around in the coal furnace fire box to pull out the “clinkers”, which were the large chunks of glass that would form. They came from all the sand particles that were embeded inside the coal chunks, which would melt in the heat and blend together to make asteroid like shapes. They would bounce around in the firebox and make quite a racket.

@Jethro, wow…thanks for your post.
I can remember my Dad going on about the freaking
clinkers, but I’ve never known what they were. At the time, I was too young to be curious enough to ask.
And you reminded me of something I hadn’t thought of in many years. Our coal furnace had these bolt things sticking out the front of it. And there was a big old wrench that my Dad used to crank on the bolt things, which I think rotated some grate inside, and the clinkers would drop down so he could shovel them out.
No wonder he and Ralphie’s dad hated those sumbitches!
