Doc set me this story and challenged me, as a New Yorker, and asked me if I knew anything about the monument in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene Park.
Nope. I did not know this.

I was born and grew up right around the corner.(Dekalb ave) I remember playing there as a kid and I never knew the story.
learn something new every day.
The war didn’t start in ’76 as he said…that was the signing of the Declaration.
The war started officially at Lexington/Concord April 1975
The Brits were barbarians
Have not heard this part of our history before. Certainly adds another dimension to the importance of why the American colonies needed to throw off the chains of the imperial and suffocating power of the British hold over us.
BTW, in Great Bitain these old ships turned prisons were called ‘The Hulks’. It is from these ship/prisons where most of the convicts who were sent to the new colony of Australia came from.
Thanks, Doc & bfh.
You plucked the word from my mind, norman. That is stunning. I had no idea. Thanks.
I rode on Flatbush Avenue for years only a few blocks from Fort Greene Park. I never knew this story. I never visited the Park. What a shame.
Damn. There is so little we know. Thanks Doc.
Thank you for posting this. It’s good to know more truth about our history, considering how much is being actively erased from, or rewritten in, our schools’ textbooks.
Being born and raised on the “Left Coast”, now I don’t feel so bad not knowing about this.

Fascinating, I would think this would be in the history books you read in school. Great story.
That was fascinating. Tyranny is rising again…
