Donny Deutsch – “I’m listening to you and I want to ask a very specific question. Should anyone’s taxes be raised at this point. Yes or no?”
Congressman – “No.”
That was fine. Deutsch continues-
Deutsch- ” Then how do you negotiate with someone who comes from your point of view? We do have this deficit. So it’s purely entitlements, no taxes anywhere. Guy makes $5 million dollars a year and his taxes should not increase? And we’re gonna solve a problem in this country, with an attitude like that?”
This is how the congressman should have answered, instead of the squirming Nathan Thurm imitation that he did.
Congressman – “Where is Obama’s bill that would only raise taxes on people making over 5 million dollars? I haven’t seen that. That would be, as you say, ‘a negotiation.’
But the fact is, your attitude and solution doesn’t solve a thing. What the left is engaging in is purely symbolic in order to satiate the likes of you. They know the current spending is unsustainable and you couldn’t balance the budget by confiscating every dollar of the top 1%. So, why are you lapping this up so readily and getting so angry with conservatives?”
That’s not what happened. The congressman’s answer allowed Morning Joke to follow with, (paraphrasing) “If you got all the spending cuts necessary to start heading in the right direction, would you give up something at the negotiation table?”
The congressman’s answer stunk. He simply said, “no,” which made him sound like a stonewalling lunatic. In fact, someone said “and that’s the problem in America, right there.”
That was the perception that was left, instead of the congressman saying, “what the heck good would it do to raise taxes on people in order to feed an insatiable beast for another week or two? Is that how progressivism is defined today, demagoguery?”
The congressman couldn’t put them away. It was painful. But it wasn’t the most painful. That moment came when the inevitable was brought up by Mika. She asked the congressman about gun control in light of the Newtown massacre.
Mika: “Do you think it’s time to take a look at assault weapons and discuss whether it’s time to change laws regarding them?”
Congressman: ” Bla bla bla, I have kids, bla bla bla, video games, bla bla bla, moms and dads. bla bla bla no simple solutions, ramble ramble, bla bla bla.”
Buzzzz. Here is how it should have been answered.
Congressman: “I think what you are calling an assault weapon is a regular rifle dressed up to look like a military weapon. Is this what you want to ban? In regards to high volume magazines, the shooter could have had a bag full of loaded handguns and the result would have been the same. Guns exist, they are not going away. I find it amazing that the same people who say it is impossible to round up 15 million illegal aliens are now going to successfully round up 200 million guns. It’s ridiculous. You want to know how to stop a bad guy with a gun? With a good guy with a gun.”
