‘Forward’ to the Past?

By Thomas Sowell from JewishWorldReview

The political slogan “Forward” served Barack Obama well during this year’s election campaign. It said that he was for going forward, while Republicans were for “going back to the failed policies that got us into this mess in the first place.”

It was great political rhetoric and great political theater. Moreover, the Republicans did virtually nothing to challenge its shaky assumptions with a few hard facts that could have made those assumptions collapse like a house of cards.

More is involved than this year’s political battles. The word “forward” has been a political battle cry on the left for more than a century. It has been almost as widely used as the left’s other favorite word, “equality,” which goes back more than two centuries.

The seductive notion of economic equality has appealed to many people. The pilgrims started out with the idea of equal sharing. The colony of Georgia began with very similar ideas. In the midwest, Britain’s Robert Owen— who coined the term “socialism”— set up colonies based on communal living and economic equality.

What these idealistic experiments all had in common was that they failed.

“Many people believe that after suffering through a severe winter, the Pilgrims’ food shortages were resolved the following spring when the Native Americans taught them to plant corn and a Thanksgiving celebration resulted. In fact, the pilgrims continued to face chronic food shortages for three years until the harvest of 1623. Bad weather or lack of farming knowledge did not cause the pilgrims’ shortages. Bad economic incentives did.

In 1620 Plymouth Plantation was founded with a system of communal property rights. . .People received the same rations whether or not they contributed to producing the food, and residents were forbidden from producing their own food. . . Because of the poor incentives, little food was produced.

Faced with potential starvation in the spring of 1623, the colony decided to implement a new economic system. Every family was assigned a private parcel of land. They could then keep all they grew for themselves, but now they alone were responsible for feeding themselves. . .

This change, [Governor William] Bradford wrote, had very good success, for it made all hands very industrious, so as much more corn was planted than otherwise would have been. Giving people economic incentives changed their behavior. Once the new system of property rights was in place, the women now went willingly into the field, and took their little ones with them to set corn; which before would allege weakness and inability.

Once the Pilgrims in the Plymouth Plantation abandoned their communal economic system and adopted one with greater individual property rights, they never again faced the starvation and food shortages of the first three years.

Maybe the libs should go back a little further in time then FDR and LBJ to see socialisms failures.

To the left failure is fine so long as we all fail equally, except for the central planners, who shall be greatly rewarded for creating equality.

People these days will not suffer any more than a one or two word soundbyte slogan, such as “forward” or “hopey changey”. Romney and other Republicans DID try to explain things; but, between the attacks of the brown-nosing, Obama owned, media and the constant disruptions by Obama’s “Code Pink” and “Occupy” riots and more Obama Teleprompter canned speeches (NOISE) – only about half of the American people HEARD anything but Obamamania propaganda.

Much like most of the German people today, I suspect the day will come when the image of Obama will evoke the same disdain in Americans that Hitler’s image evokes in much chagrined Germans today. I can only hope his narcissism doesn’t result in similar results for America as tragically did Hitler’s narcissism for Germany.
