Zero Dark Thirty confounding liberal film critics
What if Hollywood made a high profile movie that carried an implicit message supporting George W. Bush’s War on Terror policies and made Barack Obama look naïve? What if the movie were made by an acclaimed director, and was really, really good?
Why, you’d have the amusing opportunity to read up on the critical reaction To Kathryn Bigelow’s new blockbuster film, Zero Dark Thirty.
I confess that when I learned that Hollywood was to enjoy very broad cooperation from the intelligence community for the production, I assumed that the Obama Administration would get a free pass, a semi-hagiographic treatment of the bold president ordering the raid in Abbottabad that killed Osama bin Laden.
Kyle Smith, writing in the New York Post, explains how the closely detailed film treats the subject, and why President Obama is not happy with the outcome:
After seeing it, I can report that it is a clear vindication for the Bush administration’s view of the War on Terror. Moreover, “ZD30″ subtly presents President Obama and by extension the entire Democratic establishment and its supporters in the media as hindering the effort to find bin Laden by politicizing harsh interrogation techniques and striking a pose against them that was naive at best.
Since the film is based on unpublished interviews with primary sources, it is unusually difficult to fact-check. But as information about the reality behind the story emerges, so far “ZD30″ is standing up factually and is consistent with relevant statements by former CIA Director Leon Panetta and lawmakers with access to classified information about the raid.

Wow, if Ms. Bigelow isn’t careful she could become a castout member of the Hollywood elite. Who would have thought a director would be truthful and respect the military.

So film critics are discovering that the entire Obama narrative has been more of a make-believe fiction than a film has? I’d be impressed, but I think we all here at iOTW came to that conclusion ages ago.

So how should I view the post election release of the film? If I remember correctly there was a a lot of speculation leading up to 11/6/12 that the film was going to help Teh Omen get re-elected. then suddenly, the films fell off the pop culture radar screen.

Anyone like the theory that Bigelow cut a deal with the current Admin. to delay release in exchange for all kinds of access?
I mean a movie that portrays W as competent goes so far against the Hollywood meme that it foreces one to suspend disbelief. Maybe that will be her next movie – you know plucky movie maker fights both Hollywood and Washington to get the true out there about the heros manning the wall against the Barbarian hordes.
Cause I can’t figure it out other wise. The only other explaination is that there are still people in the movie business with integrity and honor, and that’s just took weird even for Lala land.

Here’s one caveat that no conservative will raise, even as it does highlight an extreme form of bigotry. About two thirds of this movie, which will probably be the only movie about the Bin Laden raid, is focused on the work of a female interrogator.
I’m sure if you drew up a list of the 50 people most responsible for the takedown of Bin Laden, you’d probably come up with 49 white conservative men and this one woman. But, discretion being the better part of valor, none of us will say much of anything about this, as this is the best we can expect from Hollywood
On the other hand, if a film focused on the actions of one conservative white male while basicallly ignoring the equally or more heroic actions of several hundred women and blacks … I’m pretty sure the liberal critics wouldn’t be as restrained
