One Who Yawns
Supposedly some new facts about Geronimo surfaced. The guy hated Mexicans and converted to Christianity before his death.

Geronimo’s original name Goyahkla, or ‘One Who Yawns,’ hardly instills fear
‘He ran the U.S. army ragged in Sonora’s Sierra Madre and never even fought a skirmish, much less a battle,’ Utley said. ‘This awareness led to my conclusion that Geronimo’s true greatness as a fighting Apache was not in fighting a war but in avoiding war.

That he hated Mexicans shouldn’t be a surprise. At the time Mexicans were slaughtering Indians of many tribes, including Geronimo’s family.

Didn’t the injuns get all worked up over the Bin Laden raid being called Operation Geronimo? I think Barky ended up bowing to somebody for that.

No fights = undefeated.
I can buy that.
To a point.
While I may not lose a fight from not fighting one – I can certainly lose a war by not fighting any.
Are reservations a win for Geronimo, et al?

And his grandson used to sit outside in Ruidoso, New Mexico, in good weather so that the tourists could come and talk to him and slip him a little money. My uncle used to love to tell the story about how when he approached Geronimo, “Geronimo” immediately asked him, “you brother?” Yes, my uncle could have passed for an American Indian, an Italian or Black Irish.

Well i guess I have more in common than a name then. Geronimo in spanish is jarome. then ‘one who yawns’, is another as i am always tired. I guess the only thing missing now is leading the govt into the wilderness and losing them. what a goal…

As someone who has studied Geronimo since childhood, I can tell you the primary thesis to this write up is false. Yes Geronimo most certainly did fight, was wounded multiple time, was an ambush artist & he and his small band of warriors had about a 15:1 kill ratio. He fought on horse back into his late 60s & only surrendered when he had no one left to fight along side him. He loved his heritage 7 his Apache way of life & hated those that came to replace it. We should all study Geronimo, Crazy Horse & Osceola.
