I never got much into “Catcher”. The three books about Franny, Zooey, and Seymour were the ones that intrigued me at an impressionable age. Left me with far too much angst, though.

They dropped Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer long ago. The article says that the novels are being replaced with texts from the EPA and such groups.

It’s partially funded by Bill and Melinda Gates-who I guess are going to have the kiddos read, “How not to Contract Malaria” or “Ten Ineffective Ways to Build an Operating System for your PC.”

@MaryfromMartin The book that stood out for me in high school was Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton. I remember it was totally depressing and utterly pointless. I tried watching the movie version-it was no better even with hunky Liam Neesom.

Why don’t they just give them comic books dumbed down to the lowest common demoninator, geez. Now they’ll never know that the F word was in Catcher In The Rye. Give me classic literature any day of the wk. over a curricula whose only aim is to make me ready to work for the common good. I want to be like John the Savage in Brave New World and experience the grace and meaning of life found in literature rather than just be a replaceable cog in a soulless society who only aim is to produce workers for the common good. If that makes me old fashioned, so be it. I also want to be like the older guys at the end of Fahrenheit 451 a living book after the world has gone to Hell in a handbasket. Someone has to do it in order to stave off the loss of knowledge in a new dark age. TS Eliot, says it the best in Choruses from “The Rock”,Where is the life we have lost in living? Where is wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?…

Right now, the high school class I have a connection with is reading “The Island of Dr. Moreau”, “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” and “Heart of Darkness”.

I dunno–I think something uplifting would have been nice, to balance those out.

I worry more for my grandchildren and what their world will be like when I’m gone. I hope they will not be so turned away from reading books that they won’t appreciate the treasured library that I will be leaving for them.

My favorite book in high school was Gone With the Wind.

That being said, I will never forget my senior English lit teacher being horrified that none of us 22 seniors had ever read Jane Eyre or Ivanhoe. Wringing her hands and tucking in the strands of her French twist hairdo, she paced the classroom saying, “People . . people! I can’t let you go off to college without having read these classics. Certain books are referred to all the time, and you will be in the dark if you have not read them. This wasn’t in my lesson plans, but I will order in ten copies from Scholastic Book Services. You will take turns reading Jane & Ivan, swapping them out to a classmate when done.” Dear Mrs. Hollander! She’s still going at age 99 and was the best teacher I ever had.

I just looked it up on wiki…never read it, or even the Cliff Notes…probably got an F on that report…got a d- in high school english my senior year..I could not stand that ditz of a “teacher” Dot Baker.

I even got so low as to turn in my older brothers papers from the year before…he was in honors english and got all “A’s”…I turned in the same papers to the same teacher in regular english and never got above a C…I think the only reason she gave me a D- was so she would never see me again…

here’s a bit of nostalgia…elderly fellow doing caricatures in Hotel Galvez, Galveston, Tx, told me of his being fired from the University of Texas Austin campus, in the ’60′s, for daring to teach “Catcher in the Rye” for college lit…his name was Claude Allen, and was a terrible lecherous old fellow, and probably young fellow too, but always enjoyable to have a drink with…RIP, Claude!

But I was a farm girl, too, loving adventure stories.

And I forgot about Robinson Crusoe–indeed, it rocked! I also liked Swiss Family Robinson, after seeing it on the Wonderful World of Disney. Our generation will make out much better than the younger hip-hop generation if TSHTF. What’s that old teeshirt saying, “Age and experience will always triumph over youth and treachery.”

I was fortunate to grow up with a huge library right at the end of my street. My sister and I spent hours there and brought home tons of great books.

I believe the meaning of the word “education” ought to include developing a good character, appreciation of liberty and how easily it can be lost, developing moral and ethical standards, and reading of all of the great classics which teach about God, pain, virtue, strength in adversity, truth, the reality of evil, courage, honesty and tools on how to make good decisions. Socrates and Plato, the Bible, St. Augustine, St. Thomas, The Federalist and Anti-Federalist papers, The Fall of the Roman Empire, Anne Frank’s biography, etc. These are the kinds of literature that enhance and develop the mind.
