My Grampa was stationed at the army air corp base (not corpse)in HI when the attack happened. My dad was 5 and shot at by a Japanese plane. For some unexplained reason my dad never thought dropping the a-bombs was a bad idea.

You know, it really helped put things into perspective when eight years after the event Harry Truman admonished the country that, henceforth, the Pearl Harbor attack should be memorialized by a national day of volunteerism.

My mother and father (not yet married) left on a Friday to go on a trip to upstate New York. Accompanying them were my mother’s friend and her boyfriend. They were all going to the boyfriend’s parent’s house. Both guys stayed with his parents while the girls stayed at a local motel. They had a great time on Saturday and left early Sunday to get back to NYC.

On their way home, just after 1:00 PM Eastern Time as they were listening to the radio, the announcer broke in with the news that Pearl Harbor had been bombed by the Japanese. Just over 3 years later, my father was logging 30 missions in B-17s over Germany with the 91st Bomb Group of The Mighty Eighth (8th Air Force).

About 17 years after Pearl Harbor, my father was C.O. of Chrissy Field in SF. Japanese Emperor Hirohito was visiting the U.S. and he and his family made a stop in SF. With all the attendant brass and stars around, some general orders my father, “Fly the crown prince around the bay.” So my father flew Crown Prince Akihito on a sightseeing tour around the SF bay. My father was not too happy about it seeing as how he remembered Pearl Harbor.

By the way, Akihito is now Emperor of Japan.

I’m surprised that with NBC reporting it wasn’t just chalked up to a simple mistake the Japanese made while on their way to a training exercise and that the flight leader Trayvon Hirohito is in no way responsible for this perfectly understandable, tiny navigation error.
