Snow traps drivers for days in giant Russia traffic jam

(Reuters) – Thousands of trucks and cars have been stuck on a major highway, some for more than two days, in a traffic jam dozens of kilometers (miles) long caused by heavy snow northwest of Moscow, Russian media reported on Sunday.

Police in the Tver region said field kitchens were operating on the road, but many drivers complained supplies never reached them and they were running out of gasoline to keep their engines running and heating on in subzero temperatures.

“Drivers help one another and that’s it, the problems are on the side of the authorities, there are no gasoline tankers, no water, nothing, we are just stuck here,” a truck driver who identified himself as Sergei told Rossiya 24 TV channel.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev dispatched Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov to Tver on Sunday for a meeting on the situation, and Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin was ordered to report to Medvedev on Monday on measures to end the jam and help stranded motorists, Medvedev’s spokeswoman said.

Reports put the length of the traffic jam at between 40 km and 200 km (120 miles) at different times on Sunday. One man told the state broadcaster he had advanced one kilometer over the previous 24 hours.

No big deal! Ever been on I-40 around Flagstaff in the winter? This happens more than a few times, every year. Not 120 miles long, usually, but you’re often stuck for 24 hours or longer.

Just imagine all the carbon emissions coming from those stuck autos. By Algore’s calculations, that should have had the snow melted in a matter of hours.

Wait, how did it get cold enough to snow like that in the first place?

Back in the mid-90′s I was working at Camp Navajo, which is adjacent to I-40. Myself, another truck driver, our boss and the commander (Colonel) were sitting in a front office, drinking coffee and watching the traffic SLOWLY start to move after being stuck in the snow overnight. The Col. looks at us drivers and queries, “How come those truck drivers when they pull out, leave a jug of orange juice on the side of the road?”

The other driver gives me that look which said: I’m not even going to touch that one! Putting on my most respectful face, I turn to the Col and say, “Uh, Sir. That isn’t orange juice.”

For a second, nothing. Then a faint flickering, followed by a flash of light as the light bulb in his brain clicked on. He turned slightly red and immediately changed the subject.

This guy was a Colonel for a LONG time. The AZ Guard kept him at that position for about 9 years, where a normal tour for his rank is 1-2 years. He actually did a fair job running the camp but eventually got his Generals star a few years after that morning and got transferred to State HQ.

Maybe they figured he could finally tell the difference between OJ and urine.

They are not commies, they are just a bunch of poor slobs stuck in horribly corrupt country with no way to fix anything or make it better.
If you like Southerners, you will probably like most Russians too.
