Indian rationalist targeting ‘miracles’ fights blasphemy charge
When water started trickling down a statue of Jesus Christ at a Catholic church in Mumbai earlier this year, locals were quick to declare a miracle. Some began collecting the holy water and the Church of Our Lady of Velankanni began to promote it as a site of pilgrimage. So when Sanal Edamaruku arrived and established that this was not holy water so much as holey plumbing, the backlash was severe. The renowned rationalist was accused of blasphemy, charged with offences that carry a three-year prison sentence and eventually, after receiving death threats, had to seek exile in Finland. Now he is calling for governments to press Delhi into dropping the case. He has warned that India was sacrificing freedom of expression for outdated, colonial-era rules about blasphemy.

I’m curious as to how people who bow down before crucifixes get around the commandment . . .Exodus 20:4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
Just sayin’ . . . that crucifix looks a lot like a graven image to me, and they’re attributing to the graven image powers that God reserves for himself.
I was raised by a Catholic step-mother, and was once married to (lapsed) catholic woman. When they tried to explain it, the words sophistry, and pretzel logic filled my befuddled mind.

@Dismas In Wonderland, I believe the Roman Catholics defend their statues by referencing the fact that the ark of the covenant included representations of seraphim.
Unfortunately, Exodus 20:4 is not the only verse where Roman Catholicism is in clear violation of Biblical teaching. I went to Catholic schools for 13 years and it was my experience that, when confronted with obvious contradiction like this, Catholic clergy are quick to remind you that ‘tradition’ is to be held in the same regard as scripture. And they define what is or isn’t ‘tradition’. It’s one of the many reasons I left the Roman Catholic church and became a Christian.

In full disclosure, I have to admit that my default positions when it comes to religion are, confusion, and self-righteousness.
My (earthly) father was a scientologist, my mother was a backsliding Baptist, and my step-mother is an excommunicated Catholic (for marrying a divorced man). So even though I consider myself a Christian, I have to admit that I’ve broken every one of the 10 Commandments (except for the one against murder), and that’s just since Tuesday, this week.
So, I’d advise others to do their own investigations, because – well that’s just what the Bible teaches . . . Acts 17:11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
