Sources: DNI Cut ‘Al Qaeda’ Reference from Benghazi Talking Points, and CIA, FBI Signed Off

(CBS News) WASHINGTON - CBS News has learned that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) cut specific references to “al Qaeda” and “terrorism” from the unclassified talking points given to Ambassador Susan Rice on the Benghazi consulate attack – with the agreement of the CIA and FBI. The White House or State Department did not make those changes.

There has been considerable discussion about who made the changes to the talking points that Rice stuck to in her television appearances on Sept. 16 (video), five days after the attack that killed American Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens, and three other U.S. nationals.

Republicans have accused her of making misleading statements by referring to the assault as a “spontaneous” demonstration by extremists. Some have suggested she used the terminology she did for political reasons.

However, an intelligence source tells CBS News correspondent Margaret Brennan the links to al Qaeda were deemed too “tenuous” to make public, because there was not strong confidence in the person providing the intelligence. CIA Director David Petraeus, however, told Congress he agreed to release the information — the reference to al Qaeda — in an early draft of the talking points, which were also distributed to select lawmakers.

“The intelligence community assessed from the very beginning that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack.” DNI spokesman Shawn Turner tells CBS News. That information was shared at a classified level — which Rice, as a member of President Obama’s cabinet, would have been privy to.

An intelligence source says the talking points were passed from the CIA to the DNI, where the substantive edits were made, and then to FBI, which made more edits as part of “standard procedure.”

None of this explains why Obama, Clinton, Rice brought up the video. Nor does it exonerate them from carrying on for 2 weeks about it not being a flat out terror attack. None of this exonerates Obama and Clinton from not providing security, and not sending military aid, which is the real issue. I need a new avatar – 2012 sucks.

I’m with Jayne. This article doesn’t say a damn thing – just more general accusations aimed at a generic office, with no specific facts aimed at a specific individual.

More of the same B.S. – a headline, a convoluted reference, and then silence. No calls for James Clapper to resign; no blame, no accountability, and definately not anyone in the Obuphuk administration’s fault.

The media will pat themselves on the back and say, “See, we reported the Benghazi cover-up. What’s your problem?”

“Now on to more important things: George Bush is pushing this country over the fiscal cliff, but Dear Leader Obama-the-Great will sign an executive order today declaring that his office will have the final say on how to save us from fiscal destruction.”

This BS story will be the official line until it is shown to be disinformation, and then it will be considered no longer “operative” (to use another Nixonian term).

Sen. Chambliss told Chris Wallace, “We’ve got to get some State Department officials in to really explain why you send an ambassador basically unguarded with a few Libyan guards.”

Sen. Lieberman added, “In my opinion it was irresponsible to have our State Department personnel there with only three security guards.” He went on to say that, “Either we should’ve given them the protection they deserved, or we should’ve closed that mission in Benghazi as the British government had done a short while before.”

Links to al Qaeda were deemed too “tenuous” but a phony story concocted to scapegoat an American film maker was solid enough to push? I guess if you have the “righteous (breaking) wind” of the media at your back.

I would love to hear an audio clip where the administration discusses their strategy to avoid impeachment charges for dereliction of duty and aiding and comforting the enemy. I know they have talked about how they might deal with it.

So, the White House knew the story of the protest based on the video was not true, because obama would have the unclassified documents, but still ran with it.

How exactly does this clear any of that up?
