Mom wants city oaks torn down to protect kids with nut allergies
Even since an Ontario mother launched a campaign to have the oak trees near her kids’ school cut down, arguing that falling acorns endanger children with severe allergies, mommy bloggers have been calling her nuts.
“Apparently, making schools nut-free facilities isn’t enough!” exclaimed cafemom.com. “We now have to fear school-aged children munching on yard debris.”
Donna Giustizia, appearing before the city of Vaughan, insisted that acorns dispersing from oaks on city-owned property next to St. Stephen Catholic Elementary School gave students at the nut-free facility “a false sense of security,” the Star reports.

But a child would have to be forced to eat the bitter nuts to have an allergic reaction, allergists say.

So here’s a question for all the IOTW peeps — I’m in my 50s and never dealt with any kids with “nut allergies” growing up.
My kids didn’t encounter this when they were in school.
Why do you think we now have this “epidemic” of nut allergies?

If someone has an allergy they have an allergy, and I wouldn’t do anything to try to tempt it. However, it really irkls me when it becomes everyone else’s problem: no perfume, no peanut products of any type, etc. This peanut one really got my goat when my son was in pre-school, because he himself had two allergies and so I just made him other things, such as PB & J, which he loved. Then one day it is suddenly forbidden because of a kiddo who just breathing it could kill him.
Are you serious? How are these people ever going to exist in the real world? Are they going to go around demanding everyone get out of their way and clear the path of everything everyone else likes? If an allergy is THAT bad I am sorry they have to endure it, but why should everyone else have to suffer?

Ever hear of an Epipen? Anyone who has a life-threatening, chronic allergy should know how to use one. This mother is negligent if she’s so worried about her child’s allergies yet hasn’t instructed him/her how to take care of him/herself.
If allergists say that a kid would have eat the nuts, she is pathologically neurotic to think the trees have to go.
My granddad had a saying: “It doesn’t take all kinds to make the world go ’round. We’ve just got ‘em.”

I’m allergic to some pollens. So, I demand that all flowering plants be destroyed, wherever I go–or could theoretically go, which means everywhere–for the rest of my life.
Oh, and all pictures of flowering plants will have to be destroyed too–everywhere, as detailed above–as the mere sight of them could trigger my anxiety.

They should be more concerned about protecting the kids from the perverts in the liberal education system. You can’t eat an acorn without going through the long process of blanching it. The taste of a raw acorn right off the tree would keep any kid from eating it.
You can make good flour from acorns if you know how to do it right.

JCLADY I am with you, age wise and thinking wise.
None of my classmates dropped dead from someone eating a PB&J next to them in my school years.
There is something fishy going on when wholesome natural foods like peanuts are banned for everyone to possibly save one from some allergy that did not even exist a generation or two ago.
