ACROSS US, VETERANS DAY COMMEMORATIONS UNDER WAY
Saturday marked the first of what will be three days of Veterans Day commemorations across the United States.
The holiday falls on a Sunday, and the federal observance is on Monday. It’s the first such day honoring the men and women who served in uniform since the last U.S. troops left Iraq in December 2011.
It’s also a chance to thank those who stormed the beaches during World War II – a population that is rapidly shrinking with most of those former troops now in their 80s and 90s.

The memoriam began at midnight with today’s and WIZARD of ID. Parker and Hart, and now Mastroianni, could always be counted on to remember Jesus and veterans.

Thank you veterans from a US Navy Vet. Thank you everyone who has ever served in the American military thruout our history since the American Revolution. And especially bless all the remaining World War 2 Vets, the forgotten Vets of Korea, all the Viet Nam Vets like myself who are still misunderstood because of that lousy war that we should have won and for all the younger Vets who have served since Viet Nam particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan. May God continue to bless us all! THANK YOU, from a very grateful fellow American Veteran. Well done, I’m proud to have served like I did even though my part was a small one it was well worth my service and all of our services combined to keep the United States free and especially for WW 2 Vets to liberate Europe and Japan from tyranny. May God bless us all and the United States of America.

My late Father spent Christmas ’44 holed up in a burned out building in Bastone waiting for GenPatton and his division. Surrounded by Nazis who pounded them day and night, they refused to surrender. Cold, hungry and running out of ammo, they kept fighting. Some say it was a turning point in stopping the Nazis.
He never talked about his time in the war and it wasn’t until a few years ago that my siblings and I recognized the “strangeness” of his behaviour as PTSD that plagued him (and us) his whole life.

Thank you, Vets.
As a Vet myself, I find myself in a very strange place this year.
For the first time, I am no longer certain that I feel any sense of pride about defending the freedoms of those too damned stupid to realize the importance.
I realize that today is not Memorial Day, but today, I will be taking my 2 year-old son to Arlington National Cemetery. I pray that he will be able to enjoy the freedom these honorable men died to protect.
Perhaps a little perspective will help me shake off this post-election funk.

First, thanks to you for your service.
Second, thanks to you for taking your son to observe the day.
Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, family members: our traditions and memories will die out if we don’t pass them on to new generations. Find a group who visits the cemeteries to plant flags. Take your family (and the neighbor kid, too) to a Veterans Day memorial observance. Do something to mark the day and make it special. Kids remember these days spent with their families and they remember why it is important to you. Families still have more influence with their kids than do school teachers.

@Blacksmith8 — don’t forget the Cold War; many of us worked long and hard in prepration for the Great Fulda Gap Live Fire Exercise that was cancelled in 1989.
My oath was taken in 1976 and was to the Constitution. Like yours, it has never expired.

Thank you Vets. My Father and his brother served in WWII. My Uncle was among the first Americans to enter one of the liberated death camps. They’re both gone now, but I’m thinking of them today. With tears in my eyes.

My 86 year old step dad joined the Navy in ’44 at 18. His destroyer, the Myles C. Fox, escorted the Missouri into Tokyo Bay for the signing of the peace treaty and he saw the aftermath of Hiroshima first hand. There aren’t many of these guys left.
