    We are selling a sensible diet and plenty of exercise while the other side is giving away free ice cream and Obamaphones.
    We are right, and all knowledgeable people know it, but now there are not enough knowledgeable people that vote.

    A question. China, Cuba, North Korea, Venezuela, Viet Nam, the old Soviet Union.
    Do, or did, any of these have welfare, food stamps etc?
    You see, once voting becomes unnecessary. Buying votes becomes foolish, and counter productive. Riot over the loss of entitlements? Well, Uncle Joe and Chairman Mao, have shown us how to deal with the unruly. When you no longer need useful idiots, they become a burden.

    I’ve been in the hospital, and they ask a *lot* of questions before they treat you – medical, personal, religious, and financial. I was surprised at the depth and detail they wanted.

    Anyway, when they were done with the questions, they advised me that I qualified for $200/month in food stamps and probably could claim permanent disability and maybe get other benefits too. The lady said this with a big smile like she was really excited at my good luck.

    Let me tell you, I’m a little sick but I ain’t nowhere near disabled. (you fillys hear that?) Apparently my definition of disabled and the government’s definition of disabled have a little bit of space between them – like enough to drive my tractor through.

    How can people resist something like this? With just a few forms and the a doctor’s signature I could be on the government teat forever. What would most people do when offered this? And I do mean offered – I didn’t suggest anything and told them I didn’t need food stamps. They acted like I was being too proud and said I could come back anytime if I changed my mind. Then during my treatment I had like 4 social workers visit and offer me more ‘free stuff’.

    I guess some folks need that sort of help but dang they sure were aggressive about providing it. Makes me wonder if they’ve got a stake in how many people they can put on Barry’s payroll.

    @cfm990: Of course China, Cuba, North Korea and Soviet Union didn’t have welfare – they had something better: summer camp. And winter camp. Actually, camp all year round. Boating, hiking, archery – I think they had all of the activities. And you learned something to – that’s why they called them “education camps.” Or was it re-education camps? I forget, but it sounds like the same thing.

    I know it sounds distasteful, but if by you refusing the money means more loot going to the Obama-phone lady, then maybe we are not helping things by taking a principled stance while drowning in a sea of amorality.

    Had a somewhat similar situation to Xavier’s when my son was born. For gits and shiggles, Mrs M had already checked to see what, if any, benefits she or our son would qualify for. The answer was, of course, none.

    Nevertheless, while in the hospital, we kept getting information from various helpful folks on how to apply or qualify for this or that “program”. There was a lot of “here, you’ll need this (form, info card) to sign your baby up for (program). ” It was presented in the most natural “everybody does it” way.

    And it made me just a bit ill.

    I felt kind of bad doing it like that at first. Not any more. I bought the flag stamps that say “Freedom”, “Justice”, “Equality” and “Liberty”. They now look correct upside down.
    We gave the bastard four years to make things right, now it’s payback time.
