Woman charged in bizarre Walter Reed confrontation
BETHESDA, Md. – A Virginia woman is facing charges after a bizarre incident Tuesday in which police say she appeared to be biting a bar of soap and tried to hit a Department of Defense police officer with her car outside the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Angela Akosua Cobbold, 27, of Manassas, is charged with first-degree assault and reckless endangerment, according to court records. In an initial appearance, a District Court commissioner in Montgomery County ordered her held on $20,000 bond.
A half-hour before the crash at the medical center in Bethesda, Md., police say Cobbold’s black Mitsubishi was clocked traveling 93 mph on Interstate 66 in Virginia. Police alerted officials in Maryland to the speeding car, which at 11:50 a.m. made a U-turn in front of the security gate at the medical center and was stopped in traffic.
Officers who approached Cobbold’s car said they observed her “biting or attempting to eat a bar of soap,” says Capt. Paul Starks, a Montgomery County police spokesman. But the officers – part of the Department of Defense – weren’t able to engage Cobbold before she crashed into another car and headed back onto Wisconsin Avenue.
