The Gender Pay Gap is a Complete Myth

The Gender Pay Gap is a Complete Myth

CBS

According to all the media headlines about a new White House report, there’s still a big pay gap between men and women in America. The report found that women earn 75 cents for every dollar men make. Sounds pretty conclusive, doesn’t it? Well, it’s not. It’s misleading.

According to highly acclaimed career expert and best-selling author, Marty Nemko, “The data is clear that for the same work men and women are paid roughly the same. The media need to look beyond the claims of feminist organizations.”

On a radio talk show, Nemko clearly and forcefully debunked that ultimate myth – that women make less than men – by explaining why, when you compare apples to apples, it simply isn’t true. Even the White House report: Women in America: Indicators of Social and Economic Well-Being explains why. Simply put, men choose higher-paying jobs.

Here are 8 reasons why the widely accepted and reported concept that women are paid less than men is a myth. The timing couldn’t be better – today’s International Women’s Day 2011. What better time to empower women with the truth instead of treating them like victims. And, in case you’re wondering, Nemko’s source of information is primarily the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics – rock solid.

Most, if not all of the gap in pay between the sexes is accounted for in time spent at the job. Women do not spend as many hours or years in the work-force and therefore earn less than males who typically spend more hours and years at the job. After correcting for hours spent on the job, the sexes are paid the same.

In my field, women start out at higher pay since there are so few of them and companies must meet government “hiring goals” (read: quotas).

    I feel so used.

As Prager says – If women were being paid less for the same work as men…why would anybody hire men?

In the military industrial complex, its even worse. Almost all the woman are in or eventually go into management, i.e. not front line workers, engineers or makers. Woman are paid way more at government contractors – if they go into management, otherwise what Papodoc said.

@grayscape- You’re not allowed to point that out; it makes sense. There are rules about these things, you know… ;)

Unfortunately, it would have been political suicide for Romney to point out that the Ledbetter Act is worse than a typically useless show of political gloss – it can actually retard business. However, at some point someone in government needs to stand up and point out that these types of laws are at best useless, and at worst (or more likely) dangerous.

“According to the 2011 annual report on White House staff, female employees earned a median annual salary of $60,000, which was about 18 percent less than the median salary for male employees ($71,000).”

Oh do as I say not as I do, right Dear Leader?

The most dangerous job for a woman is being a wife. Women should be paid more for being victims.

In any situation where a man and a woman are doing the same job, and receiving equal dollar amounts on their paychecks, and both have employer provided health insurance, the woman is making thousands of dollars more a year in total compensation than the man.

Women’s health insurance costs far more than it does for men.

A few years ago when our 2 man company hired a woman to work in the office, adding her to our health insurance more than doubled the total cost.

It also nearly doubled our workman’s comp insurance cost.

This is with 2 men in their 40′s working in the field at an often hazardous job vs. a woman in her 30′s working in the office.

American women today are the most fortunate class of people in the history of the world. They have it better than anyone else has ever had it.
