Public Opinion: Ford up – GM, Chysler down after Obama bailout
Survey results released on Sunday from Rasmussen Reports shows that the bailout of GM and Chrysler has left the bailed-out with a poor public image while Ford, the only major American car maker not to take public money, is enjoying rising popularity.
When 1,000 people were asked if they viewed each of the car makers as very favorable, somewhat favorable, somewhat unfavorable or very unfavorable, Ford came out strong.
44% of respondents said they looked favorably upon Ford, while only 12% and 13% said the same of Chrysler and GM respectively. When looking at all positive responses, 78% of responses were positive for Ford, 54% for GM and 43% for Chrysler.
The unfavorables are equally as enlightening. Ford saw only 13% unfavorable ratings, GM 45% and Chrysler 43%.
The assumption would be that the bailouts hurt the car companies that took them, but why work from assumption? The survey then asked respondents how the bailouts affect their impressions of the big three.

Exactly – People are voting with their wallets. I’ve got a pre-depression Chrysler Jeep and a Honda. Can’t afford to change vehicles now, but when the time comes, my dollars will go to an auto maker that is not nationalized. Under no circumstances should anyone, other than me, fund the vehicle I choose to drive. Because they will find a way to take it back.

My last GM was a ’89 Buick, it didn’t last 80K miles. Now I have a ’02 Honda with 310K miles and is still gets in style and gets 40 MPGs.

There has been a distinct loss of quality with GMs in the last 5 years… especially in electrical problems. My current GM I will drive until the wheels fall off (thanks to the obamaconomy) – but once they do, F150 here I come.

If I worked at GM, I’d be furiously trying to get a job at Ford.

Lots of GM jobs going to China. Chrysler bought by Fiat, who has never made good cars. It’s Ford, Toyota, or Honda for me.

Take it from an experienced mechanic, Ford sucks. If you’re not mechanically inclined and have to rely on other people to fix your vehicle for you, you can drive whatever you want to.
Chrysler is even worse.
If you want a reliable American made vehicle buy a Toyota.
