PETA upset that artist killed butterflies

British artist Damien Hirst stands beside his 2006 piece I Am Become Death, Shatterer of Worlds, which used the wings of thousands of butterflies.

(Newser) – British artist Damien Hirst, famous for his works using pickled and dismembered animals, has once again angered animal rights groups—this time for a work that used live creatures. His “In and Out of Love” exhibition at London’s Tate Modern allowed visitors to observe the lives of butterflies close up, but more than 9,000 of the insects died during the 23-week exhibition after being trampled or brushed off visitors’ clothing, the Telegraph reports. The tropical species used has a life expectancy of nine months in the wild, but most only survived a few days in the Hirst exhibition.

Full disclosure – I’ve killed thousands of ants, and nothing is going to stop my crazed obsession with an ant-free house.

Where’s PETA when hundreds of thousands of birds and bats are killed every year by wind generators dotting the countryside?

I’m with scribble. PETA, not unlike the Leftist women’s groups, are VERY particular at whose ox they are goring at the time.

I’ll pay attention to PETA when they start caring about the “ugly” animals too. not just the cute pretty ones.

I’m sure PETA would have no problem with art involving a human fetus.

I hate it when I side with the crazies. But on this issue I do.

This is art, and really very similar to the wing art they did back in the Victorian era. Butterflies were so plentiful and some species (now extinct) so large they were brought down with a shotgun, their wings pressed under glass for trays. You can still find jewelry that has been made with butterfly wings. It was all the rage. But I am sure many species became extinct because of it.

For me however, I choose to enjoy these beauties in my garden, out in the fresh air. Yep, they are bugs, sure; I understand that. So when this dude does an exhibit with the exoskeletons of fire ants I will be the first in line. Until then I will side with the crazies.

I can’t see intentionally killing them either. I swerve to avoid hitting frogs. Butterflies are harder to dodge though. But I will back up for a snake and run over it three times.

Aw, I’d swerve to avoid the snake too if I could. Just had one in my kitchen the other day. I have no idea how he got in, but of all the houses he could have chosen, mine was the right one. He went right back into the garden where he belongs not missing a single scale!

Obviously not a viper. I let the good snakes live too. You must have a mouse hole somewhere you don’t know about.

I not only kill critters like this… I get paid to do it and I’m good at it.

    PeTA:

The little known truth about PeTA is that they kill any animals they “save”. It is the killing of them that saves them by their logic.

Killed the puppies picked up at a shelter, put them in a trash bag and thrown in a dumpster. Witnessed and documented.

They do not really care for the animals they just don’t want humans to have any.

Well I reckon PETA better get off its ass and start protesting ME.

This weekend I went fishing and I killed:
    -16 Sheepshead
    -10 Black Drum
    -1 Redfish
    -50 Bait Skrimpses (live shrimp)
    -2 bags of ice

Then I killed a six-pack just to watch it die

    Are butterflies classified as animals?

I thought that PETA stood for the ethical treatment of animals not insects.
