Clear Eyes Full Hearts Can’t Use

‘Friday Night Lights’ Creator Tells Romney to Stop Using His Show’s Slogan

“Clear Eyes. Full Hearts. Can’t Lose.” Just reading those words is enough to give us chills. We picture Coach Taylor in the the Dillon Panthers’ locker room, delivering a heartfelt speech that will inspire his team to come back from behind and win the big game. So we understand why Mitt Romney, a self-proclaimed fan of the show, would want to co-opt the phrase. Not so understanding: Friday Night Lights creator Peter Berg. In fact, he’s written the GOP candidate a letter that accuses him of plagiarism.

“I was not thrilled when I saw that you have plagiarized this expression to support your campaign by using it on posters, your Facebook page and as part of your stump speeches,” Berg writes in the angry missive. “Your politics and campaign are clearly not aligned with the themes we portrayed in our series.”

But wait, it gets better: “The only relevant comparison that I see between your campaign and Friday Night Lights is in the character of Buddy Garrity — who turned his back on American car manufacturers selling imported cars from Japan.” Now that’s a zinger. Head over to the Hollywood Reporter to read the letter in full.

( more )

In the Friday Night Lights movie that is planned I guess Buddy Garrity will be selling Chevy Volts now?

The show is set in Texas, the characters are patriotic, strong and independent and by O’s own standards embody all that is bitterly clingy. I’m pretty sure they’d cast their vote for Romney/Ryan.

(Okay, maybe the Romney campaign should have gotten permission. What is the copyright on this sort of thing? FNL remains one of my all time favorite shows even if the writer/director has shown himself to be a dufus.)

“Your politics and campaign are clearly not aligned with the themes we portrayed in our series.”

Then the series portrays anti-American, anti-capitalist, anti-family, anti-God themes, right?

How about this? Fuck him and fuck his show. I heard his next project (working tile “Friday Night Showers”) is about life of “coach” Sundusky. More in line with political view of the other side.

    Dear Mr. Berg:

Since you have said that Governor Romney’s politics are not aligned with the themes portrayed on your show Friday Night Lights, we were wondering if you would tell us just what those themes are? It seems as if you are making the assumption that your politics match those themes, because that would be the only reason to write the letter you did to Governor Romney.

The themes that we see on your show clearly match our politics and values; hard work, individual effort, determination, team work, all leading to a job well done and success. Governor Romney stands for those themes as well, as you can see over his long and clearly successful career.

However, in the past 4 years, unemployment has risen, food stamp use has risen, and government dependency has risen. Not one of those themes is something that we or Governor Romney espouse, but they are the themes that Barack 0bama espouses. And it is an obvious conclusion that you must be an 0bama supporter due to the tone of your letter.

So once again, we fail to see the connection you have made between the themes of the show and those of your politics, namely support for Barack 0bama. However, we DO see the connection between the themes of your show and the values of Governor Romney.

Therefore, we would appreciate it if you would apologize to Governor Romney. Of course, it is not necessary do to so, but then again, it is also not necessary for us to watch your program either. Think about that the next time you villify a fine American like Governor Romney and try to lionize a complete and abject failure like Barack 0bama.

Typical doucebag hollywood asshole. He writes what he knows sells to conservatives then reinterprets it outside the show to attack anyone threatening Obama. This time though it could bite this dumbfuck on the ass because if this gets a lot of play he’s going to lose a lot of his audience. This is the same crap as the West Wing. Bartlett (at least in the first few years of the series) had a lot of conservative values as reflected by the scripts/plots. The coke addle minded writer Sorkin knew if he went hard left he wouldn’t get the audience he needed so he throttled back his lefty views and pocketed a pile of cash.

Yeah, like GM is happy where it’s at right now anyway.

They’ve tried to exit their ownership by the government, but can’t.

If they had been allowed to go bankrupt they would be in FAR FAR better financial shape now.

They would still exist, but they would have been able to GET RID OF THE DAMNED UNIONS.

    Idiots.

Actually, he’s directed a few pretty good flicks-I thought The Kingdom was excellent-his last effort was a huge bomb so maybe he’s feeding the REgressive powers that be.

Still, I agree with the guy that said he’s a dick.
