I Blame Index Cards
Statistically, kids that use flash cards, index cards or pieces of cut up paper in order to communicate their pain commit suicide at a much higher rate than kids who do not.
It’s time to ban small square paper.
Assiness aside-
Tragically, this girl committed suicide. She committed suicide over something that an adult would view as silly. That’s the frustrating part. But conversely, adults commit suicide over things that a kid would think is silly.
Of course the “anti-bullying” crowd is serving up their usual yap-yap. Adults “bully.” But they expect adolescents to not bully. Okay. I decree that kids shall no longer have pimples, too.
(Maybe if the schools actually got kids immersed in learning… This girl was an atrocious speller.)

This kind of thing is getting so prevalent! Teen is bullied, teen commits suicide, society blames bully.
BS!!! Everyone has been bullied at some point! Yeah… people shouldn’t be mean, but get over it! We should be pissed at this girl who did some STUPID things (broadcasting your tits to the world and then sleeping with someone just because their girlfriend is out of town qualify as stupid) for killing herself.
Sounds to me like she brought alot of it on herself.
Such a shame – I bet they were pretty boobs too…

Dang, my kids used index cards to study vocabulary words, learn the periodic table, practice equations, etc.
We had one “family” computer, monitored their time and punished them if we found out they had been in a chat room.
They did not have a cell phone until they were able to pay the bill.
I know I’m dating myself, but that really wasn’t too long ago.

We have either forgotten or neglected who we are and why we are here to the point that we endanger our eternal state for the sake of supposedly escaping the pain and suffering this life brings all of us.
How many have believed to the point of suicide that their misery will now end, only to discover that the father of lies has trapped them for all eternity from truly experiencing peace and joy with God?

A couple of observations from this very sad story. Bullying that ends in suicide has been going on forever. The predators always find the weak ones and pounce on them. It’s a damn shame that she seems to have missed out on having parents that could instill a sense of self-worth and confidence that would have allowed her to avoid the events that spriraled out of control and ended in her death. While this type of bullying (and blackmail if we’re going to be honest) has been going on forever the internet, webcams and applications like facebook have made it a damn sight more efficient for the predators to find the weaker ones. Parents need to really limit the time kids spend out in cyberspace as well as monitoring what they are doing. Screw the lefties that would whine about violating the kids privacy. They’re kids you morons and they need to be taught right from wrong and to be looked after until all the lessons parents have taught them take root. I only wish that the young lady had published the names of her tormentors, not for any type of vigilante justice (although taking a bat to the knees of some of these players would certainly have a satisfying sound) but rather to let everyone know what type of people your kids may be hanging with as well as pointing out the parents who would raise evil little monsters like this. Finally, I’m a little ashamed that this happened in Canada as we tend to be kind of smug about some things. It certainly hammered home the fact that regardless of where you are parents need to keep an eye on their kids and raise them with values and ideals that give them confidence and self respect.

Some Skorpion observations:
1) 13-15 is a weird age — the hormones are hitting young bodies full-force in that age-bracket, and both boys and girls go a little nuts, albeit in different ways. Back then, I knew girls like this, who’d show their budding racks or even lady-parts on a dare. But the Internet and cell-phone cameras have destroyed the innocent silliness of such pubescent games, since one flash can now be captured, replicated endlessly, and broadcast to the entire world.
2) Did Amanda tell her folks about the first incident? If I was her dad or mom, I would have tracked down the troll who broadcast the images all over the Web, and filed charges of producing and distributing child-pr0n against this person. I guarantee that would have stopped the bullying-campaign cold.
3) scr_north is correct — this sort of stuff has been going on since time immemorial, but the Internet has opened it up far beyond the confines of adolescent cliquedom. I was bullied terribly as a child and adolescent, and only survived because my folks raised me to fight back against it, and to realize that there were *far worse* things than being “unpopular” (although it may be different for girls, who seem to be more social beings, esp. at that age.)
4) Adolescents are incredibly cruel, and deeply sensitive — a bad combination. I’m not surprised at all that Amanda saw no way out of the situation, and thought things would never change. Per the anti-gay-suicide ads, it DOES get better, even though it seems like it never will. But in the meantime, this kind of bullying and rejection hurts horribly when you’re young, and sometimes you just want the pain to STOP — even if it means going into the Big Sleep for good.
5) On the whole, it’s a sad, enraging story. I hope they find the creeps who trolled Amanda, and hit them with the worst charges Canadian law allows. And prayers for Amanda — may the Lord show you the love and mercy you never got in life.

It occurs to me that most of the stories similar to this one …the parents are divorced or separated. All of this is brought on by the death of Christianity. Parents who can’t find a way to stay together, parents who don’t pay attention to their children until it’s too late, parents who don’t teach their children manners, respect for others. I’d be willing to bet that all those kids who were making her life hell, are living lives of hell themselves. Of course, that’s no excuse for their behavior, but it is evident in their lack of love for their fellow man. What bothers me is that in this delightful blog, iOTW, there are some whose comments are not in the least respectful to this girl’s story. It is easy to say, oh, why didn’t she just ignore them. Can’t they remember being a teenager and the hurtful things that went on?
I’m sorry this girl couldn’t or didn’t get help. I hope her soul is resting in heaven.

I had a friend who’s cousin blew his brains out playing Russian roulette, and knew a few kids who OD’d on drugs, but all of the intentional suicides that I knew about when I was growing up were carried out by adults.
When you teach kids that we are all part of a big power called the universe and they start believing it, some weird shit is going to happen.
You can’t replace God with science or anything else.
