Our government helps you apply for handouts immediately, but forces you through a maze if you want to work

Remember what the unemployment center used to look like? It was a place where people lined up to talk with a government “expert” who would assess your aptitude and find suitable leads.

I can’t help but think that National Healthcare would look an awful lot like this experience-

Read on. John Stossel reports:

Reason Mag -

I sent four researchers around the area. They quickly found 40 job openings. Twenty-four were entry-level positions. One restaurant owner told me he would hire 12 people if workers would just apply.

It made me wonder what my government does in buildings called “job centers.” So I asked a college intern, Zoelle Mallenbaum, to find out. Here’s what she found:

“First I went to the Manhattan Jobs Center and asked, “Can I get help finding a job?” They told me they don’t do that. ‘We sign people up for food stamps.’ I tried another jobs center. They told me to enroll for unemployment benefits.”

So the “jobs” centers help people get handouts. Neither center suggested people try the 40 job openings in the neighborhood.

My intern persisted:

“I explained that I didn’t want handouts; I wanted a job. I was told to go to ‘WorkForce1,’ a New York City program. At WorkForce1, the receptionist told me that she couldn’t help me since I didn’t have a college degree. She directed me to another center in Harlem. In Harlem, I was told that before I could get help, I had to come back for an 8:30 a.m. ‘training session.’”

Got most of my jobs by word of mouth, newspaper ads, and a good pair of walking shoes.
They could be using those free cell phones to help them get a job if they actually wanted to work, but that’s not part of the plan.

In other words a Jobs Center is the modern equivalent of a soup kitchen. Same idea, Orwellian name.

I’ll tell you right now, I’ve never taken a damn thing from the government and never will. If my health insurance and what I have myself isn’t enough to cover my medical needs, than fuck it, I’m off to the next plane.

I also will never take a penny of SS, they can stick it where the sun don’t shine even though I’m still paying into that ponzi scheme-same with MediCare.

I’ve worked for myself my whole life, made and lost a fortune and working on another one and I’ll be damned if I’ll ever stick my hand out to the government.

A person, except for some truly rare circumstances, that can’t even provide their own food and shelter, should just live under a fucking bridge until they die. Sorry Fur, but that earlier post of yours and that welfare chat room fried my ass.

Never did visit a job bank. I have been working in the same industry for 16 years. I need to take the time to detail what it took to get a job in my field here in Massachusetts. Unreal.

A good friend of mine, an artist, worked at a company for 7 years. She was laid off with a modest severance after the company was bought out and the operations moved out of state.

    She applied for unemployment.

She took on 1 freelance job in the months following being laid off.

She claimed it on her unemployment form for the amount she was paid.

Now, unemployment says she is a “business”. They revoked her unemployment and say she needs to repay the 6K that has been paid to her already.

She has used up most of her severance, unemployment helped make up the difference and she had things budgeted so she could make it a year+ as she built her freelance clientele or found another job. Now, they want her to drain her savings to spay back something she paid into and is due.

If she was dishonest and admitted nothing she’d be fine. Or if she was an illegal alien…she’d be okay too. No, honest American who doesn’t know how the system works-she’s screwed. She has 1 appeal and doesn’t know how that has turned out yet.

She lives in Pennsylvania and will be voting for Romney.
