Elspeth Reeve, of The Atlantic, has written a defense of her original article that called the posting of the Obamaphone video a racist act.
How is interviewing someone racist?
It’s not. And we never said that the person who made the tape was racist. We don’t even know who the person holding the camera was. BigFurHat of the site iOwntheWorld, who claims to have posted the video, made this defense: “I have no idea how it could be construed as racist because it’s simply a woman speaking for herself, you know, like voting.” True enough! But the racism comes in when Drudge, Rush, the people who giddily retweeted the link, do a mental calculation that if enough people would just see this video they would support Romney, because it plays on the same racist stereotypes that are usually trotted out this time of the election cycle.
So, let me get this straight. The person who made the video is not racist, that he uploaded the video to a public forum is not racist, but viewing it and finding it entertaining enough to share with others is completely racist?
I think you’re making this delineation between making the video and viewing the video in order to appear rational, but it’s having the reverse effect.
How is the sharer of the video, by linking to it, racist, but sharing the video by uploading it not racist? You’ve boxed yourself in because you actually have enough intelligence to think a few moves ahead and see where your thinking goes when strung out to its logical conclusion, yet, you didn’t have enough intelligence to drop the entire essay into your laptop’s trash file.
Strung out to its logical conclusion would mean anyone staring at this woman in disbelief would be a racist. Thinking for even a moment that this woman’s thinking represents everything that is wrong in America today would be racist
In short, it would make anyone acknowledging her thoughts a racist. That’s how absurd your premise is.
The video’s subject wasn’t picked out because she “happens to be black,” she was picked out because she is black.
You don’t think that this video would have been shared if the woman was white? Really? You really think that? You don’t think this is a rainbow nugget for conservatives no matter what this woman looked like? I would have uploaded it if it was an audio file and I had no idea what the woman looked like. I would have posted it if it was a newspaper clipping.
You are so out of line you need to offer an apology. Seriously.

As a non-black person, is it possible to make fun of a black person, because you think what they are saying and doing is ridiculous, without being a racist?
Is it possible to criticize Obama without being accused of being a racist? If so, give me some examples of what criticism would be acceptable and what wouldn’t be?

The woman in the video is reprehensible. It’s painfully obvious that she is stupid, ignorant, bigoted. I could waste another boatload of adjectives, but it would only belabor the point.
The questions are- to what extent does she typify the intelligence, and character of blacks? Is she a rare example? Would you have to go out of your way to find others like her? Or is she representative of a huge segment of the black population?
A liberal might say, “If she’s ignorant, bigoted, etc. it’s because she lives in a racist country.” In other words- the cause for her stupidity is that many white people think she’s stupid.
And if that is truly the case, one would conclude that absent white racism she would be other than what she appears to be in the video. So I ask- In what country, culture, society would this lummox have turned out to be successful, intelligent, well mannered? If racist America caused this- Where would she do better?
