Not Your Mainstream Music

(PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST IF YOU’RE GOING TO POST VIDEOS.)

From

The Irrational Gaze:

…if we think that mainstream media is biased and has an agenda, is it a huge jump to think that mainstream music is biased and has an agenda? There are so many new and amazing venues in music, so why is it that when you turn the radio to any station you are guaranteed to hear the same songs over and over? Even on the oldies stations you’re pretty much assured to hear Blondie, The Beatles, and at least 10 ac/dc songs and nothing more.

There’s is so much more out there in the music realm, so why is mainstream music putting us in this small little box where you have to hear Adele every hour on the hour? Could it be that mainstream music has the same agenda as mainstream media – keeping the population dumbed down and in a trance of simple music, where the song has no meaning and requires little thought to comprehend.

… I’d like to showcase some of today’s new genre’s of music that are not mainstream -

…a new and upcoming genre is dubstep. This is much softer, but it should be known that dubstep is like the best workout music ever.

…there’s indie style music. This genre is an awesome alternative to pop because it’s upbeat but the lyrics still mean something and it’s not all lip syncing.

There is even such a thing as alternative hip hop. This band gorillaz is pretty interesting because it doesn’t actually exist. yay virtual bands!

More Here
!snip!

Is there music you listen to that is out of the mainstream that the readers can discover from this thread? This would include any music that simply is not played on THE MORNING ZOOOOOOOOO! Or JACK FM, the syndicated station that claims they cannot be controlled – “we play what we want!!!” – and only manages to play cut three from some Billy Joel album rather than cut two, Brenda and Eddie, (or whatever that song is called.)
We are not trying to be hipster. If you’ve found a Billy Joel-type performer who no one has heard of, feel free to post it without ridicule. Feel free to post Billy Joel videos if you want to be ridiculed.

*********strong>YOU MUST READ THIS TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS THREAD**********

PLEASE DO NOT EMBED YOUTUBE VIDEOS IN THE COMMENTS. IT CHEWS UP BANDWIDTH.

HOW DO YOU AVOID EMBEDDING THE VIDEO?
EASY – YOU MUST WRITE SOMETHING ON A NEW LINE AFTER POSTING THE VIDEO LINK. THIS DISABLES THE WORDPRESS FEATURE OF AUTO-EMBEDDING A LINK.

IT CAN BE JUST A PERIOD. ANYTHING.
MY ADVICE IS TO POST YOUR LINK FIRST AND THEN WRITE YOUR COMMENT ABOUT THE LINK SECOND. MAKE THAT YOUR ROUTINE AND WE WILL HAVE NO PROBLEMS.

I HAVEN’T DONE A THREAD LIKE THIS IN AWHILE BECAUSE LAST TIME WE WERE CHARGED 300 DOLLARS FOR EMBEDDING OVER 100 YOUTUBE VIDEOS.

I WILL DELETE ALL COMMENTS THAT DO NOT FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE. NO EXCEPTIONS. THANK YOU!

Yeah I don’t feel like playing the music sharing game right now because I just tried to watch that Satanic Monkeyz video or whatever it was, and now I feel like I’m going to throw up, literally!

But would this be a good example of where “Peer Assisted Networking” would benefit us by letting us share bandwidth?

Indie? Oh, no problem. Here ya go…some Autechre. I don’t listen to this shit. My younger bro thinks this is the bees’ knees. If there’s a band called Dead White Guys, I don’t listen to them. I listen to actual dead white guys.

I don’t go to radio for music, I go to radio for talk. When I want music I go to my PC.

If there is anybody here who has actual, factual information I would love to know where the big radio stations get their play list? For any particular genre, the list seems to be the same. Bands that had 10 or 12 albums get the same 4 songs played.
I just can’t believe based on observation that they make their own list.

Who is actually doing the programming and why does it suck so badly?

Did you say that they had to be videos? There are a couple of sites that let you choose ongoing selections from menus of indie, mood, world, and so on. Some are gems, some are just OK but you can listen anywhere, on your overpriced i-whatever, or computer, or just about anything with internet connections.

I’m afraid that you’ve all missed the mark.

These two are laid back, and are a little older.

    Massive Attack – Angel

    http://youtu.be/_d4Cq5fMkS8

The Crystal Method – High Roller

Then these are a little more “pop” and newer.

Mat Kearney – Ships In The Night

    Alabama Shakes – Hold On

That old 909 made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Haven’t heard that in about 40 years.

Most of the new stuff is too corrupted for my liking.

Three more you won’t hear on the radio, and then good night all.

I’m pretty sure all of these would be illegal to play on a mainstream station:
