    When these cartoons were made, US school chirren were well-versed in history and were well aware of America’s first enemies: the Barbary pirates, all-’round dirtbags and still consistent to this day!

    Amazing, the media spin at the end. I remember Ivan Skavinski Skavar, from my childhood, but I don’t remember the cartoon, or any context other than his name.

    How weird.

    The cartoon is based on a poem that was written by Percy French in 1877. Read it in high school and no, not in 1877.

    Been a long time since I’ve seen that cartoon. I Didn’t know anything about islam back then so it’s a hell of a lot funnier now.

    Thanks!

    We must protect negroes, muslims, and other delicate hot house flowers from cartoons. That’s why the ghettos are full of violence, drugs, gangs, murders, illiterates, and unwed mothers: cartoons made them feel inferior. Same with the moslem world. It was the cartoons.

    Any body else here ever eat at a Sambo’s restaurant? They had pictures on the wall of lions chasing– [you guessed it].
    I thought they banned them in the 70s but it looks like the original one is still in business:

    @Bad Brad:
    Back in the 80′s when Blockbuster rented VHS tapes the one near me had rows and rows of old Warner Brothers toons. I rented every one they had. All were good, some were great, and some are pure genius. I understand that you can still get some of them on disc, but you have to endure a lecture from Whoopiss Goldberg before you’re allowed to watch.

    Ahhh. Remember cartoons? Not that Family Guy crap but real cartoons like every Saturday morning was filled with. At the movies you felt cheated unless the feature was preceded by a good cartoon. No more.

    I have BUGS NIPS THE NIPS on laserdisc. I should look for others in that set which may still be available on eBay.

    Remember LITTLE BLACK SAMBO well, too. He was (east) INDIAN! (There are no tigers in Africa.)

    Those of us who grew up watching the real thing turned out to love America.
    These kids and brain-dead liberals who sit and watch shit like the Family Gay will be the ones responsible for the destruction of our country.

    Flush Hollywood already, it stinks!

    That really was the golden age of animation and while some of the toons seem a little tasteless only a moron would think that a warning was needed. Perhaps some of these PC idiots don’t realize that 80 years have passed since they were made. About this cartoon specifically while there was some caricature done (tubby middle eastern guy and scarecrow-like russian) there was nothing racist or nasty about the tune or the dialog.
