Lock Out Has Now Reached Absurdity

Home - by - September 25, 2012 - 00:42 America/New_York - 46 Comments

The Packers were just ass raped on national television by the Division 3 replacement referees.

Seahawk’s QB threw up a hail mary that was clearly intercepted by Jennings of Green Bay. Tate, after he offensively fouled a would-be defender by pushing him in the back, fell to the ground with the interceptor. Tate shove an arm through Jennings’ arms and put a hand on the football. One ref had it right and signaled touchback. The second ref signaled, idiotically, touchdown.

No problem, you say. The play will be reviewed.

They reviewed it. They got the review wrong.

Look for yourself.

I’m sure there will be assholes out there who will be like Obamabots and see this as a touchdown because they’re a fan of Seattle, or they hate the Packers.

I hate the Packers (Bears fan, you see). Be that as it may, the worse call was the pass interference a couple of plays before that allowed Seattle to keep the drive alive. Initially, the catch in the end zone did kind of look like a simultaneous catch, but replay should have overturned the call.

People are bitching about the referees, and they are not NFL caliber, but the fault lies with the NFL. The NFL game is too fast, and the players too saavy when it comes to what they can get away with, for these guys to have a chance at officiating a competent game. Come on, NFL, get your regulars back.

@Wyatt — Mike Tirico made the correct statement about the officiating. The head coaches have to go to their owners and the owners have to go to the league and demand the other officials back because teams are losing games. What happens if next week the Seahawks lose the game on a last second bad call? They won’t bitch about this game but they will about the next one.

At first, I wasn’t too upset about the replacement officials. Then I saw the players taking “liberties” with the opposing players because they knew the replacement officials wouldn’t be up to the task.

And it’s not about someone getting hurt. Colin Cowherd got it right when he said that players have been getting hurt with the regular officials all along — think Darryl Stingley. So that’s a wash. I’m not being heartless here. I’m merely stating a fact.

This mess is going to cost someone a championship.

I don’t watch football, I don’t care who wins and I couldn’t tell you any name of any player on either team, and I don’t live near Seattle or Green Bay.

But looking at that, totally unbiased, the guy in the yellow and white had it in his hands when he hit the ground.

The whole sequence wouldn’t have even happened if not for the bogus roughing the passer call that nullified the interception.

As for the official review, the booth official technically made the “correct” call within the narrow confines of what he is able to review.

Incredibly, the question of who was actually in possession of the ball wasn’t reviewable once the official on the field signaled a touchdown.
The booth official was limited to determining if the ball was caught, and if it was in bounds, that’s it.

As a 49er fan of many years, I was rooting for Green Bay. So you can take my opinion with a grain of salt. But BFH got it right in his description above.

If Green Bay loses a playoff spot to Seattle because of this game, there will be hell to pay. And if Seattle does anything with that playoff spot, people will say it was because of this play. What if the Seahawks knock the Giants out of the NFC playoffs or go to the Super Bowl and beat the Jets? How many New Yorkers will be chewing nails about this play?

This is the worst part; nothing good will come of this.

@”That Guy” — Except that when the two officials walked up to the pile of players, they made opposite calls. If you watch the officials, they run up to the pile, looked at each other as though they are conveying some information to each other, then one signals touchdown and the other signals clock stoppage which would be a prelude to a touchback call. Watch the replay over until you actually observe the officals. When the one that signals clock stoppage stares at the other one, you can tell that when he starts to raise his hands for the signal, he thinks the other official is going to call a touchback. So that’s what he started to do.

    Just one big BuFu.

Not a GB fan, and yes, GB got dryfisted.

    However…

If you find yourself in a situation where a bad call can cost you the game, you really haven’t done enough to win it. If all ya can muster is 12 freakin’ points, then I have only a small amount of sympathy.

    Vinny,

    I dunno just yet.
Jets offensive line has been horrible, and Seattle’s pass rushing looked to be about the best in the NFL.

Right now I don’t see the Jets gaining much yardage on Seattle. They aren’t running, and Sanchez hasn’t had much time to throw against worst pass rushing than Seattle.
    17-6 sounds about right.
I don’t see 14 because the Jets defense is still good and Seattle’s offense isn’t top flight.
    Should be good game though.

Other than the blatant offensive file, there was a high school playoff game in FL where the same thing happened. It was ruled that when two players have their hands on the ball when they land on the ground, it goes to the offense. I don’t think that is what happened here though. GB had caught and had control of the ball. As BFH says STL just slid their arm in.

Bad call. Should have been a penalty and a reply.

What’s different is that this failed experiment with inept, incompetent and unqualified officials doesn’t affect my country or my pocket book.

I’m a Packers fan and still steamed this morning. Rodgers was right when saying the Pack shouldn’t have been in that position, given the great way the Seahawks D played in the first half.

Anyhow, my 10 year old daughter watched the play this morning and said the ref was stupid for making that call. I wouldn’t say stupid, but clearly not qualified to be a ref anywhere near the NFL level.

One more observation– NFL players (though not all) make millions; refs get about $100k, right?

Huge dollar amounts change hands in American courtrooms every day but the jurors who make the decisions only get about $15 and that for downtown parking fees.

I guess there’s something magical about an official raising his hands in the air. One official said yes, the other said no. Why was it automatically yes? Couldn’t they have talked about it first?

And to BFH, the review officials didn’t get it wrong. Apparently, some petitfogging rule prohibits replay officials from deciding who has possession, even on a touchdown.

So what I think happened is the refs are thinking, “Well the replay will sort this out” not understanding that this “Tuck Rule wannabe” rule would prevent that. What the eff kind of rule prevents you from taking everything into account when ruling on a touchdown?

Be that it may, I am on notice to the NFL (Not Fookin’ Legitimate) that I will not watch football again until they get rid of that socialist, Roger Goodell (sp), Obama’s Union buddy. Or, at least until October is over and they stop wearing that fairy pink sh!t.
