I’ve been thinking about doing a unrecognizable but innocent crayon drawing of a person, along the lines of a 4 year old’s talent, titling it ‘Mohammad by Davey’, and posting it at some of the radical blogs.
I’ve never had a fatwa before and feel left out.

@Dagny–
It’s a common mistake, made by virtually all dictionaries.
I’d suggest directing your objections to the folks at Merriam-Webster, Oxford, Random House, and Wikipedia, for starters.
Dagny
September 22nd, 2012
the point, Mary, is that folks here can’t understand islam without understanding that Christianity promotes profanation in the name of holiness.
While islam kills, rapes and tortures in the name of what it holds to be sacred.
We need to embrace an ethics of radical profanation.
Nothing is sacred = good.

how do suggest we explain islam is not religion without distinguishing between sacred and holy?
jwm
September 23rd, 2012
@Dagny-
I’m sure you are correct. Discussing the finer points of theology, however, is sort of- well- pedantic.

“how do suggest we explain islam is not religion without distinguishing between sacred and holy?”
Not going to do your homework for you, Dagny. You’re obviously intelligent–go back and rework.
However, keep this in mind: your supposed dichotomy of “sacred/holy” is a not just a “finer point of theology”, as jwm puts it–it’s an etymological dead end.

Dagny
September 23rd, 2012
“it’s an etymological dead end”
no it’s not:
sacer is an effect of sanctus (holy, same etymological roots as sanctity).
sacer = hieros
sanctum = hagios
Dagny
September 23rd, 2012
no: the only way to distinguish between a satanic cult and Truth is by computing sacer and sanctum.
they promote sacer
we promote sanctum

Dagny, none of that’s gonna mean shit to my 1911. I hate to sound to neanderthal, but what you are defining is not going to carry much weight when your trying to protect you and yours. Troubles coming, form one direction or the other.
MaryfromMarin
September 23rd, 2012
@Dagny–
It’s an etymological dead end in English. Which we speak.
Although Latin is incredibly useful on many levels, when two important, often-used words with differing Latin roots have come to mean the same in English, it is a waste of time to struggle against that. (Unless the discussion takes place in academia.) You need to move your argument into the vernacular in order for it to be effective.
Do you want to have a compelling argument or do you want to be “correct” vis-a-vis the original language? Your call.
MaryfromMarin
September 23rd, 2012
@Dagny–
“the only way to distinguish between a satanic cult and Truth is by computing sacer and sanctum.”
I beg to differ. The way to distinguish between a satanic cult and Truth is by the action/revelation of the Holy Spirit, and prayer.
Dagny
September 23rd, 2012
” The way to distinguish between a satanic cult and Truth is by the action/revelation of the Holy Spirit, and prayer.”
Yes, of course. But I meant: within the sphere of language.
The distinction between sacer and sanctum is active in English as well: sacred and holy.
“To sanctify” refers to holy. Sanctum, sanction, sanctity: it’s the domain the Law.
“To consecrate” refers to sacer.
At one points, it will be extremely important to explain how islam is nothing but an evil cult.
We need to forge powerful concepts.
MaryfromMarin
September 23rd, 2012
@Dagny–
I fear that your insistence on differentiating between “sacred” and “holy” will have limited impact. Not enough people will be illuminated.
I think it is clear enough to many people that Islam is nothing but an evil cult. Those who don’t understand that will be unlikely to be persuaded by word definitions. (No sarcasm intended at all.)
Dagny
September 23rd, 2012
concepts are autonomous ; they can not be reduced to word definitions.
they belong to thought; they are weapons to affect the brain.
they belong to LOGOS, to Reason.
Beyond words, beyond dictionnaries.

Dagny — Your discussion sounds interesting, but it is moot at this point. We are dealing with an existential question — i.e. does the West (read Western values) have the right to exist or not?
