Jimmy Carter files report on UFO sighting
On this day in 1973, future President Jimmy Carter files a report with the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP), claiming he had seen an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) in October 1969.
During the presidential campaign of 1976, Democratic challenger Carter was forthcoming about his belief that he had seen a UFO. He described waiting outside for a Lion’s Club Meeting in Leary, Georgia, to begin, at about 7:30 p.m., when he spotted what he called “the darndest thing I’ve ever seen” in the sky. Carter, as well as 10 to 12 other people who witnessed the same event, described the object as “very bright [with] changing colors and about the size of the moon.” Carter reported that “the object hovered about 30 degrees above the horizon and moved in toward the earth and away before disappearing into the distance.” He later told a reporter that, after the experience, he vowed never again to ridicule anyone who claimed to have seen a UFO.
During the presidential campaign of 1976, Carter promised that, if elected president, he would encourage the government release “every piece of information” about UFOs available to the public and to scientists. After winning the presidency, though, Carter backed away from this pledge, saying that the release of some information might have “defense implications” and pose a threat to national security. Illustr8r, Vampira was incredible. I did makeup on her about 2 years before she died. Still had those cheekbones (just not all her teeth).

Was he drinking with his brother Billy when he saw it? That Georgia moonshine is mighty powerful stuff.

Vampira WAS incredible. Elvira ripped off her entire act and got away with it. You’re very fortunate to have met her.

@ mtn dog, I heard on an Atlanta talk station yesterday that Carter deregulated the alcohol biz in order to allow people to brew their own beer at home. Has to be the only good thing he did. Heck, even most Georgians hate the guy.

Xavier, she sued Elvira and lost. She was a character right out of Sunset Blvd., but sadly, she was poor.

To be fair (but where’s the fun in that, right?) to Jimmah, in his Playboy interview I just read last night he said the object was probably from a nearby military base and that since he couldn’t identify it, it was indeed an unidentified flying object. Let’s ridicule the S.O.B. for what he did to the country, not for being honest.
@cakes
I saw a documentary on Vampira a few years ago and have since been able to acquire some old public domain films she did. Quite a woman.

Yeesh, Hell froze over and I am suddenly nostalgic for Carter. Granted, he handed Reagan a worse economic situation, but at least we could count on the electorate to step up and fix things.

As much as I detest Carter I have to have some respect for him. He was a naval officer who graduated Hyman Rickover’s nuclear propulsion school which was not for wimps and assisted in containing the Chalk River nuclear accident up here in Canada for which took courage (that problem was a lot worse than the government and media let it on to be). Then somewhere along the road he lost his common sense, his patriotism, his courage and his leadership ability. I wonder whether in moments of clarity he sits back and wonders where it all went wrong.

You know, if the UFO gave Jimmah an anal probe and a brain implant, that would explain a lot.
