Ann Romney: birth control, gay marriage not “what this election is going to be about”

KWQC

DAVENPORT, Iowa – Ann Romney told KWQC TV6 News Friday that birth control and gay marriage are issues that “distract from what the real voting issue is going to be at this election.”  Mrs. Romney says the election is about “the economy and jobs.”

Mrs. Romney, speaking to KWQC morning anchor David Nelson, said she wanted to speak about women’s issues, echoing the theme of her recent speech at the Republican National Convention.  “My message, really, was ‘women, I hear your voices.’”

“I wanted to make sure that women of America knew that we have been across this country for the last year and a half and we are very aware of how tough it is for them,” Mrs. Romney said.  “I think all of us know that women work harder than anyone and that they hold down jobs, they are raising the kids, they’re trying to get food on the table and everything else and they’re really being stretched.”

When asked if she believes a lesbian mother should be allowed to marry her partner, Mrs. Romney said, “I’m not going to talk about the specific issues.  I’m going to let my husband speak on issues.”

When asked if she believes that employer-provided health insurance should be required to cover birth control, Mrs. Romney said “Again, you’re asking me questions that are not about what this election is going to be about.  This election is going to be about the economy and jobs.”

“I’m here to really just talk about my husband and what kind of husband and father he is and, you know, those [birth control and gay marriage] are hot-button issues that distract from what the real voting issue is going to be at this election.”

I like this – it shows that the Romney team knows they need to stay focused on the real issues. I too think Ann is going to make a great First Lady. She’s got the same qualities I admire in Sarah Palin and Laura Bush.

“really if you want to try to pull me off of the other messages it’s not going to work.”
Very wise to unequivocally discount those “gotcha” questions and put those topics to rest right up front. Now no other interviewer can bring them up without looking like a total ass (well, we know some of them take pride in their assholeness).

Yes by all means steer the conversation away from the gay lesbian marriage bullshit; the condom war on women bullshit, and back to. jobs, the economy, the war on terror, becoming oil/gas independant. Don’t let the left wing media steer the conversation. Good for you Mrs. First Lady.

I agree that Ann stays on message for Republicans. However, I had a disturbing conversation today with my oldest (turning 30 next month).

She told me her concerns based upon what she is seeing from her age-group friends on FB. They are so focused on “I don’t care about anything else, I’m not voting for a Republican because they’re going to take away our choice”.

Call this a “distraction” if you want. I see it as a concern. If these young women do go to the polls and vote, they will not vote for Romney/Ryan.

    :(

    @jclady

I’ve harped on the single female voter of reproductive age demographic that people have told me to STFU but it’s real and it’s in play. Barry and Co. realized this group was instrumental in the ’08 election but had become disenchanted so they drummed up the War on Women, and to a large degree it’s working. My opinion is that the PACs should tackle it and let Romney and Ryan stay focused on the economy and jobs.

@Xavier — I agree with what you say, but neither Romney/Ryan nor the PACs are getting the message out on any media with which these young women are connected.

@Maudie — I know, that, you know that, everyone on this site knows that.

I’m just saying the younger generation has a totally different view on abortion and gay marriage than we.

Also, there’s a HUGE demographic dependent on Obama’s stash.

This is going down to the wire. I hope and pray that the debates this year have the same effect as the 1980 debates.

What a beautiful woman, and with real American values too. I cannot wait. It is going to be like Christmas morning for a kid when we get a working president and a First Lady who actually Loves America.

0bama will try to hijack the elections. We have to stop him by exposing every single act of corruption, and never let up until we have a real President in office who will help American to prosper once again.
