OBAMA DECREES DOUBLE GAS MILEAGE FOR CARS BY 2025

Human Events

As reported by the Associated Press, “The average gas mileage of new cars and trucks will have to nearly double by 2025 under regulations that were finalized Tuesday by the Obama administration.  The new rules will require the fleet of new cars and trucks to average 54.5 miles per gallon in 13 years, up from 28.6 mpg at the end of last year.”

It’s rather cheeky for an Administration that couldn’t accurately predict the results of its own trillion-dollar “stimulus” plan to be mapping out the future of the automobile industry a decade or more after Obama leaves office, and it’s all being done in the name of the weird “global warming” religion, which still obsesses about “greenhouse gases” even after the theory of man-made global warming has been conclusively debunked.  These fuel standards will kill people – radical increases in fuel economy standards always do, because the cars become lighter and less able to protect passengers during collisions.  But no price in blood or treasure is too high to pay for the official State eco-religion!

Automobile dealers have long complained about the burden Obama’s madcap increases to fuel efficiency will place upon them, because they’ll jack up the price of new cars.  The Administration optimistically estimates the price increase will be offset by $8,000 in fuel savings over the lifetime of the vehicle.  That’s the kind of thing a politician wholly ignorant of economics would say.  Don’t worry about paying thousands of dollars extra up front, folks – you’ll slowly save $8,000 over the course of the ensuing decade, so it’ll all balance out!  Why, people will just be lining up around the block to buy the new 2025 deathtraps!

    So, the entire regulation consists of the following:

    Over-inflate your tires.

    The story I got from AP had this; “The gas mileage requirements will be phased in gradually and get tougher starting in 2017.”

    Why am I not surprised that all this crap takes place after he is out of office?

    So, I guess Obama thinks he can change the laws of physics by executive order. What a pompous idiot! There is only so much energy in a gallon of gasoline.

    @Xavier — Don’t laugh. That is not as far off the mark as you think.

    I have a Toyota Camry. Whenever I check my speed using my GPS or when I pass by one of those radar-driven automated speed limit signs, I’ll be doing the limit according to my speedometer, but the GPS and radar show it as just about 3 MPH slower. This happened in my previous Camry and in both of our Toyota vans.

    I can’t say this is true for everyone but I suspect the automakers are fudging the speed by some setting in the vehicle’s computer. This would increase fuel mileage. Not a lot, but when coupled with other technology that saves fuel, it is enough to meet gov’t standards. And the gov’t isn’t going to complain because everyone is driving slower without knowing it.

    Once again, no proof. I just believe that to be true.

    BTW, Ford and VW mfg engines in the states that are sold in Europe that get 60 plus MPG. The difference, i am told, is the emission requirements in europe are not as restrictive.

    @ CharlieWalksonWater

    Emissions! What a powerful word. Nearly every time the check engine light comes on, you can bet it is emissions related.

    Even though I am thankful we have dramatically improved exhaust emissions (especially when following a thirty or forty year old vehicle – Pee You), the environ-mental-ists have truly hamstrung the auto industry by lobbying the government to save the planet at great cost to the consumer.

    Face it: This is just another ploy to get us out of our cars and into mass transit, all in the name of control…..

    @fullcirclethinker

    I would not be surprised to see travel limits such as 100-200 miles from home as the maximum allowable for self operated vehicles, with mass transit being required for longer trips. When you add RFID vehicle tagging and scanners at every streetlight, it’s pretty easy to identify anyone who goes out of their short-range area. The range limit 1] reduces use of the highway system which is a major investment for the feds, 2] justifies small [unsafe for highway] short range vehicles for daily use, and 3] discourages travel in general, keeping the population immobile and subdued.

    Increasing gas prices will hasten these measures – that’s why Barry doesn’t give a shit about fuel costs, except in the context of reelection.

    How many people are aware of the diesel volkswagon engine being built right here in Kentucky that gets 58 mph.

    But you cant buy it here in the States. 100% export. Why? EPA regulations.

    Turns out we measure pollutions by gallons burned, not miles travelled per gallon like Europe. That would make too much sense.

    And with a wave of his imperial hand, the energy in the gallon of gasoline doubled. Ah the stuff legends are made of.

    You would think keeping us dependent on his camel jockey buddies oil would be foremost in Barry the Bungler’s mind. The more gas we use the richer the A-rabs will be and them more money they can use to fund the terrorists.

    @Blacksmith,

    Screw picking an EPA director, defund them. It takes a lot to remove an agency but if you remove them from the budget or reduce their budget to a shoestring they’ll have to make severe cuts. That’ll keep them from doing any damage.

    My 1983 Honda motorcycle doesn’t get 50 mpg! C’mon people, this number is seriously unattainable, and realistically insane. On the other hand; Every vehicle in America can run on Natural Gas with no damage to the engine, with a simple inexpensive conversion process – and we have LOTS of natural gas, should the government let us use it.
